Money Saving Hacks!

FutureMrsKC, on September 19, 2018 at 3:22 PM Posted in Planning 2 43

I've been a WW user for over a year now, and while I see a lot of "budget" ideas and money saving tips there really isn't one thread with a ton of ideas put together to help each other out! I thought about including something like this in my BAM down the road, but it deserves its own post. I've saved a dollar or two here and there so I'm going to list my hacks below, please post yours in the comments!!

-Take advantage of Black Friday! Tons of stuff go on sale for your wedding that you could use..decor, clothes for parties (bridal shower/engagement/etc.) bridal party gifts (getting ready robes and pjs), stationary, etc. GET OUT AND SHOP! Also, cyber Monday is awesome.

-If you're buying online, leave your cart full for a few days. Most likely, you'll get an email for a coupon code to finish your purchase. Davids Bridal sent me a 15% off coupon code for my order of my tulle overskirt because I left it in the cart for over 24 hours. Saved $20 and got free shipping!

-Subscribe to get emails from places you frequently shop. You can always unsubscribe later down the road, but you'll be the first to know about sales in order to snag up a good deal on something you need. This is how I found out the bridesmaids dress my girls picked was on super sale, ($80 instead of $180, and it was being discontinued so my girls all scrambled to order it, they rock!)

-Again, SALES! Never buy anything full price, including stationary. I bought save the dates, bridal shower invites, bridal shower menus, thank you cards, posters and many many other things during one of Vistaprints 50% off sales. They have them multiple times a year, so I just made up my invites, saved them in my cart and when they went on sale I bought them. (Pro-tip: they'll probably have one again before Christmas, if not a few times before Christmas.) Other websites do this too, I just love Vistaprint.

-Michael's app, thank me later. Need a large photo frame? Need a lantern or two? Need to grab some extra chargers? Flowers? ANYTHING CRAFTY? Michael's app ALWAYS has coupons for at least one item (usually 40% or 50% off), sometimes 20% off your entire purchase. I always use the app to grab whatever I need, even if it means buying one thing at a time, its such a steal.

-Amazon Prime. Self explanatory, but still worth a mention. I'd say 30-40% of my wedding items have come from Amazon. I've placed 80 orders in the last 6 months. (This includes non-wedding orders, too.) It's $13 a month for a membership. If you place 2 orders a month, you've gotten your moneys worth in shipping costs. And its 2-day delivery! Can't beat it! Prices are often lower on Amazon than other major retailers too, and ordering is freakin' easy. Love Amazon.

-If you're like me, you probably know a ton of people getting married, too. Ask them what they're doing with their decor when the wedding is over. Maybe you can buy it at a discount, or if they're really nice they'll just give it to you for free, lol. Its worth a shot to grab a Mr. and Mrs. sign from your friend at a discount before you buy it somewhere else. Helps you both out in the long run.

-Buying vs. renting. I won't get into too much detail but buying is almost always definitely cheaper than renting anything for the wedding. Its often times more of a pain, but the pain is usually worth the savings, esp. if you're on a tight budget. If you can't re-sell items after the wedding, donate them to a friend or somewhere local for others to have the chance to use them, too. (This includes lights, linens, etc.)

What are your hacks? Let me know!

I used the Honey plug in on Chrome. It searches for coupons for whatever site you're on, plugs them all in and gets you the lowest price. Its so dope. https://www.joinhoney.com/

We went with an A La Carte venue which although a lot more work - saved us money by us being able to bring our own alcohol and choose our own vendors.

I don’t have any hacks yet but as I am just getting to the stage of planning where I will be starting my STD, invites, and DIY work I am so thankful for this thread!!! Thank you FutureMrsKC for starting it!

THANK YOU for making this thread! Here's some others that I've found:

-Don't be afraid to ask your vendors to renegotiate. We didn't end up booking this venue, but one venue we were seriously looking at gave us a quote of $3500 for the space. I literally just asked if we could make it $3000, and she said sure. Always try to lower the price... worst thing that could happen is they say no!

-If you're getting your dress from David's Bridal, always check their clearance rack! My dress was a $1200 dress and I got it for $550 because it was on clearance. Can't hurt to check if they have clearance dresses in your size

-Check before you DIY. DIYing is not always cheaper. We were originally going to DIY most of our wedding (renting basically just a big room, and bringing in all our own vendors) and then realized when we added in things like tablecloths, dishes and silverware, servers/bartenders, etc. it came out to actually more money than an all-inclusive place. (Sometimes it IS cheaper to DIY, I'm just saying to always check before you make a decision)

Yes! Also a DB clearance/sale dress bride here!

DIying is definitely not always cheaper! We went with real flowers over fake because real was actually cheaper!

Amazon Prime = TOO easy. Link up a credit card and it's like shopping with other people's money. Except you're not. Lol

We did our centerpieces using vases from the dollar store. They will be candles instead of flowers, so there's some savings.

The cookie table (you know all about it) was done by me and FMIL and a couple of aunts per tradition, but that still helped save by not hiring a baker.

I second Vistaprint! We ordered our invites to early because I had no idea how often they had sales. We actually almost changed our venue after. Good thing we didn't!

Some DIY I've done like escort cards, stickers, etc. with my Cricut have saved us some money. Other DIY like making our card box did not - we should have just bought it!

We shopped around for bands and saved a good chunk. My FH used a local jeweler for my engagement ring, and we shopped around for our bands. Surprisingly for a custom band, the local jeweler was cheaper (and no doubt better quality) than the chain store by over $1,000!!! We also found FH band cheaper at a different local jeweler too. Shop local!

Agree with the leaving things in carts for savings. Same goes for Amazon. If you find something you like, put it in your cart and you will get alerts when the price changes. It could go up, but it can also go down! Ive definitely saved a few dollars here and there by doing this.

I'm buying unique vases from thrift stores for my table center pieces. They work well with my boho themed wedding.

If you don't care about the cake or cake cutting, a sheet cake is sooo much cheaper! And the dollar store. Don't buy anything until you scope out your local dollar store first!

    - make your own veil. So cheap and easy.
    - used or second hand dress
    - small bridal parth
    - after xmas sales at michaels/joanns for decor
    - realizing what is really essential to get married. For example not having matching robes, tshirts, favors, etc. Experiences over things!
    - renting items
    - realistic looking paper flowers
    - shopping on and then selling everything afterwards on FB marketplace

I would not say Amazon is money saving because many studies have shown people actually over buy on Amazon and then dont return/cant return the extras. And lots of impulse purchases!

I use Ebates! For only purchases I get chase back and a nice check each quarter. I’ve made about $50 back. It was nice buying not nonwedding and wedding stuff, sale or no sale, and getting money back. Plus if you recommend friends, you get $25 for each friend!

I second Ebates! I also use Ibotta which sometimes has better deals than Ebates so I always compare the two before buying. They have some good cash back options on travel that are definitely best around black Friday.

    Great contributions!

I would still counter argue that Amazon is money saving because while you may get "click happy" on regular items, when it comes to wedding stuff it's usually still much cheaper to purchase from Amazon than any other big retailer. It definitely depends on the person though, I haven't bought anything I won't use for the wedding.

I don't have much to contribute, but I love this thread! Such a great idea.

The biggest thing that's saved me money so far is so simple but just asking a lot of questions and being upfront about our budget. A few of our vendors have been willing to customize packages to fit what we could pay and have thrown in extras just because we asked. Our wedding is also off season so I think that helps too.

I have bought most of my wedding related event outfits on Amazon for much less than any of the stores in my city and quite a few of the gifts I’ve purchased as well so I totally agree!

My daughter saved hundreds on her designer gown just for the asking. Don't be afraid to ask for a discount, the worst they can say is no.

Buy Thank You cards from discount stores like TJMaxx and HomeGoods or where ever you find them on sale. They don't have to match your other wedding stationary and people won't be comparing cards to see that they aren't the same.

Thanks everyone! I needed this post.
My advice is if you or someone you know has the supplies and talent always DIY.
I'm doing pretty much everything DIY from the ceterpieces to the invites to my dress. But again I only suggest this if you have the experience and the extra time. I'm leaving the food, photography, and groomsmen suites to the professionals.
