Men's Rings...what are you doing?

Mrs. C, on June 15, 2013 at 1:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

So we went shoppping for FH's ring last night. We've been before, and saw a few. I know Tungsten is supposed to be wonderful, but we found a 14 k white gold that he LOVED. It's expensive, so we want to make sure it's a good decision. He works in a factory (clean, and not extremely hard work), they have to wear ring guards, and the ring has the hammered finish in the middle, so that would hide scratches well.

Looking for thoughts and what you all did.

We went to the store with the idea of getting a Tungsten, but when my FH tried them on, they weren't all that nice on him. He didn't like the bulkiness on the sides.

We ended up with a 14k white gold band that he loved.

Is a ring guard a round metal that slips over his wedding band? I think you'll be fine getting the white gold band. If he notices it scratching despite the ring guard, he could always take it off during work hours? He's going to be wearing it for many years so personally, I'd go with the ring he/you love.

My FH ring is tungsten but and we love it! He is an engineer but he will have to take it off whenever he goes into the plant for safety reasons. Also, my cousins husband had a tungsten ring and it shattered at work shortly after they got married. It seems that there are pros and cons to both so I would go with the one that he really loves and wants to wear.

I am refusing to let my FH get tungsten mainly because you can't re-size them and being sentimental I only want him to ever have the same ring (he feels the same)...

SO... he wants gold anyway and it worked out well Smiley smile

Only other thing to consider with the white gold is that it will need a little more maintenance than a tungsten ring. If its rhodium plated, it will need to go in for maintenance every year or so to keep the color. I think it will probably be around $60 each time.

Tungsten carbide rings can shatter. If you're hoping for something less expensive but still durable, I recommend titanium. We bought a titanium ring for my partner's engagement ring. Like tungsten carbide, it also can't be resized.

We are both getting palladium, could not afford the platinum. I am really rough with my jewelry, mostly because of my job. We also wanted something that was not plated, it had to be a white hard metal and what we wanted was not made in titanium.

RomaT-I had no idea that they couldn't be resized.

No, we are ok with the price; not looking for something less expensive. I figure I have two really nice rings, why shouldn't he have one really nice one? Plus, he's going to wear it for many years-why not. I want him to have a nice ring. It is well over the price of a "normal" man's band, but we budgeted a certain amount anyway. I just want to make sure that it's a good decision. I'm not familiar with the different types of rings, and how durable, etc. they are.

Gold is not particularly hard, and as I mentioned, requires a lot of maintenance. If you could find a similar ring that he likes in palladium, that would probably be a better route for you. It is much harder and retains its color. It is similar to platinum, but closer in price to gold (maybe a little bit less expensive).

H got a simple gold band (yellow 14K). It was the one he loved. Turns out it's pretty much exactly like my dad's! Haha! My dad's is all scuffed up, but it's stood the test of time. H loves the fact that he can re-size it if need be. He's very sentimental that way. I'm not. We looked at other metals, but they were either more than we could afford or couldn't be re-sized.

I have white gold and I can say that I do notice a color shift, but it doesn't bother me much. I got my e-ring re-plated right before the wedding because I wanted to make sure they matched in color exactly so they would wear similarly. I think it was $40 at a local store. I think they are both due again, but not having the really really bright white honestly doesn't matter so much to me.

Mrs. C - depending on where you buy the ring; they might offer lifetime careplans? Both of our rings are white gold, as is my e-ring. I already had my e-ring in for rhodium plating and it actually takes out all of the scuffs and scratches as well. Loved that!

And with the maintenance plan at no extra cost.

We looked at tungsten, but like was already said you can't resize them. Our Jewler said that with te warranty we could get a new one if needed but due to the sentimental side of things FH didn't want it.

Also he advised us against titanium, because if their hand was ever injured and the finger was swollen, most hospitals don't have the equipment to cut them off in an emergency situation.

After weighing all those factors we decided on 14k white gold. Definitely not the cheapest option but the best in the long run IMO.

Also I would feel kinda stingy having my white gold and making FH get tungsten because it was cheaper....my rings still cost more than double his lol.

*** Edit: I would not buy gold without a great warranty though!! We have lifetime warranties on all our rings and can have them buffed, redipped or sized at any time for free. Wouldn't be worth it without the warranty!

Candy-Thanks for that. I apparently had no idea what tungsten was other than durable.

I have the lifetime plan on mine. The jewelry store that we bought mine from has a 3 year warranty on men's rings, and no longer has the lifetime :/ We'll see I guess.

My fiance somehow managed to pick out an amazing engagement ring that I love, but other than that, we are not jewelry/bling people.

He had zero opinions on his ring, other than it should be plain.

I ended up getting him a brushed stainless steel ring from Amazon for $1.99! (more like $8 with shipping.) Brushed so that it is not shiny. Shiny was too bling-y for him. Smiley smile

If he needs to take it off for some reason (working, whatever) and loses it, no big deal. If he needs another size in the future, we'll get another one.

My sweetie is a huge car enthusiast and especially loves aftermarket extras that can be added or replaced on cars, with his biggest love being carbon fiber (such as carbon fiber hoods, shift knobs, trunks, etc.). Because of this I knew that I wanted to get him a ring that would reflect not only his love and commitment to me but also his personality, so I bought him a carbon fiber wedding band. From what he has told me and what I have read myself, carbon fiber is extremely durable, but it cannot be resized and the gloss finish on it can be scratched similar to how a gold band can. But even with these "cons", at the end of the day I know the ring I got him is the perfect one for him, and he says that if a few scratches accumulate on the band that it will be fine because it adds character to it. Smiley smile

Here's a pic of his ring for those who may not know what carbon fiber looks like.

I was hoping FH would like something along the lines of Tungsten or something from JVL but he didn't like those. We went to pick out my wedding band and he tried on some bands as well. Of course the one he wanted was expensive but given the fact he didn't cut corners on mine I didn't want to do any less for him because he loved it so. It's yellow gold with about 5 stones (I can't remember) and it does look very nice on his hand.

I say do no less for him what he would for you so get him the ring he loves.

My fiance found his at www.RingForHim.com and he loves it.

We actually bought a few different ones and he decided which one he liked the best ("The Edgar" was the one we picked). Honestly the price difference between these and the bands at Tiffany's is just ridiculous!
