Im assuming some of you on here are mothers, and I'm wondering how all of you ladies (baby-less ladies included) feel about the ban on minor circumcision that will be on the November ballot in San Fransico, CA? Im taking political science over the summer and am writing a paper on this topic and it...

Im taking political science over the summer and am writing a paper on this topic and it had sparked many debated between my friends/family and myself, so wanted to see what you all thought about it!!

As I am not entirely familiar with this particular piece of legislation, will someone clarify? It is banning all circumcision, or just on infants? For example, is it saying that parents have no right to circumcise a potentially "unwilling" infant, or that no one should be circumcised period?

    @Kathy- lol!

@FMW- perhaps you can answer my question, because i admit to not know a whole lot about male circumcision. do they give the babies any anesthetic? or any pain medication? what about if you choose to do it as an adult?

Typically local anesthetic, however it is still extremely painful. I have witnessed plenty of circumcisions and the child is in obvious pain. They are also typically restrained which adds to their discomfort.

FS, and my brothers all were circumsized as babies, I don't really see much wrong with it after all it is foreskin but hey everyone is open to their own opinions. If I have a son, I'll most certainly get it done.

My son was given something for the pain. The whole thing was VERY quickly done, not even 5 minutes & he was given right back to me afterwards and he was as content as can be.

Also, children are often restrained when given shots as they are "scared" and don't want them. So not only are the restrained, but the shots cause discomfort / pain and yet we HAVE to get those shots for our children. We have no say in it. They can't even go to school without getting those shots.

People say "well shots keep your child healthy" WRONG! There are reasons why your child will not feel well, be cranky and risk running a fever after they get shots.

My daughter will be 5 this December and hasn't had her shots in a long time. Do you know how many things she has been sick? Rarely. Do you know how often she was getting sick before I stopped getting her shots? A lot. Unfortunately, I will have to get her those shots because school requires it and she'll be going to school soon.

@ Kristina B. can you not sign a waiver saying you choose to not have your child vaccinated? Our schools let you do this.

That is surprising though kids get sicker after shots? Until I got my shots I was sick and or in the hospital at least once or twice a month.

Vaccinations and boosters are not completely mandatory. If you are interested in non-vaxing, selective vaxing, or delayed vaxing, there are plenty of ways to do so. It is difficult though if your doctor is an advocate for vaccinations though.

My son had his foreskin cut off and like I said, was given something for the pain. The procedure was really quick and when he was brought back to me, he was content as if nothing had happened. On the other hand, my nephew got this done, but his doctor did it differently. They put a ring around the foreskin and after acouple weeks it just fell off - both the ring and his foreskin. My nephew felt no pain at all despite that it took a couple of weeks and no pain meds were given.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Nobody is right or wrong for thinking or feeling what they do about the issue.

@Kathleen, I'm not the expert, but my understanding is that there is no anaesthetic for babies, and even if there is for adults, the recovery is still very painful.

I should start off by explaining that neither my FH nor I is particularly religious, and we do not feel we have any family tradition we need to follow in this respect. That said, we have discussed this and decided that, unless a doctor tells us there is a very good reason medically for doing it, we will not. My We have heard 2 primary reasons from parents for doing it: religion, and so their son won't look different from others in the locker room. To us, neither reason is sufficient for us to have an unnecessary and painful procedure performed on our son (assuming we have one). Hygenic habits can be taught. The only reason that sounds even a little convincing to us is that we've heard the transmission of HIV may be lessened by circumcision, but...there is education for that, too (and circumcision is not a guarantee).

Actually, I was told unless I wasn't giving her the shots for religious reasons then no, she would need to have these shots given. No exceptions. And if I said it was for religious reasons then I'd have to show proof and all this other mess.

As for the legislation? I'm not a fan of performing unnecessary, body-altering medical procedures on children, but it really is the parents' decision. I am not a fan of government dictating anyone's intimately private decisions.

My FH says this "banning" has nothing to do with is it right or is it wrong?, but is all about religion hatred. He said look up comic strip called Foreskin Man. He said it is INSANE!

It's a comic strip made about how the jews come take your kid and cut his foreskin and all this other crap. It was created by the same person who wrote the bill. (Matthew Hess) By the way, the Rabbi in the comic strip is made to look like a demon with a creepy face, long black finger nails, etc. and then comes Foreskin Man (super hero) and saves the baby from the evil Rabbi....

Also GB goes over the comic http://thedailybeck.com/2011/06/06/glenn-beck-tv-show-june-6-2011/ --- go to 15 minutes into the show. He shows you one of the comic books and reads to you bits from it and explains what is happening and etc.

From the information that I've read, it's my understanding that uncircumsized males have a higher chance of giving women HPV and oral type cancers. While I understand that alot of that has to relate to cleanliness, I'd rather have my son circumsized and have less risk of him infecting other women.

So, would the parents of a Jewish boy have to prove they were circumcising their son for religious reasons? This sounds like a case of government getting WAY too big. My son is circumcised, essentially because that was the hospital's routine at the time. I'm glad they would give me (let me repeat: ME, his MOTHER, the ADULT CITIZEN involved here, NOT the government) a choice today.

I know someone who was uncircumcised as an infant, but when he was 18 he got a staph infection and had to have it done. He said the pain was excruciating because he would get erections while sleeping (no control over them) and wake up screaming in pain and bleeding because he ripped stitches out. He had pain meds, but said they did nothing, and had to go back to the hospital at least twice to have stitches put back in. Almost 20 years later, he says he still has bad dreams about it and he gets queasy at the thought of it. I know another person who was 13 when he had to get it done, and he said the same thing (about waking up in searing pain/bleeding).

I would never want my child to have to go through that, and have that terribly painful experience burned into his memory. If we have a boy, he will be circumcised as an infant. (That isn't the only reason, but it definitely weighs heavy on why I would have it done). DH feels the same way/had it done as an infant too.

I do not live there but I am a mother of a son and I think it is BS. My son is not circumsized but that is only because it would cost 200 bucks to do and we did not have it. Yes it is a bit taxing to keep up with and keep healthy but, to tell parents you have no choice is ridiculous. If someone told me "you have to do it, you have no choice" id tell em where to shove it. It is a parents choice whether to do it or not. And what about parents who do it for religious reasons? No I think its absurd.

Circumcision prevents the growth of bacteria under the foreskin and this, in turn, protects male infants against urinary tract infection. The high incidence of urinary tract infections in uncircumcised boys has also been found to be accompanied by an increased incidence of other significant infections such as bacteremia (bacterial infection of the bloodstream) and meningitis (infection of the covering of the brain). The protective effect of circumcision may thus extend to a number of infectious diseases.
