Make Up, Have a Mary Kay Consultant?

Mrs. Fornasty, on January 3, 2012 at 7:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

Hey all, and thanks again in advance for you advice.

I am not a girly girl, and rarely do my makeup. I know I need make up for my wedding, and because of it being a sunday wedding I am struggling finding a salon that will open for my hair that is also offering make up. So i have to split the two of them. I have never done anything with mary kay, and wonder have any of you. Is it quality, and do these consultants know what they are doing. I have an appointment with one in 2 weeks for a trial, but I dont know how expensive it will be. Help?

Hey STB Mrs. Fornasty! I am actually a Mary Kay consultant myself and I LOVE the products. Smiley smile I do facials all the time and I absolutely love the skin care products. The make-up to me is great. Haha as for if the consultant you are using knows what she is doing, IF she has been trained properly, she should know how. And she should have already told you what the trial would cost, not sure why she hasn't. I haven't done any make-up for weddings, but I have for proms. I usually only charge $35 a face. This includes cleansing first and then applying all of the necessary components (primers, foundation, blush, eyeshadow, etc). I would definitely ask her up front what the cost is; you don't want to be surprised!

Oh, and also consultants can set their own prices for doing make-up trials for wedding etc. There are no stipulations from Mary Kay, Inc. on the topic. So it could be anything! :/

Check their reviews if you can. its kind of up in the air. i have been to parties where in know more than they do and others where they really know their stuff. i would look for consultants who do not have another source of income, this usually means they take it more seriously.

I've been a MK consultant, back before I started my business, and I'd say be careful. The make-up is pretty good, but the consultants don't always know much about application. Some are wizards, some only know what's in the training material. I'd say do a trial with one, if you really want to, but also do a trial with a licensed MUA. Oh, and I will say their skin care products are pretty great. I'm planning to re-stock on a few things from a friend for my pre-wedding beauty routine. The Satin Hands kit is awesome, and the home microdermabrasion kit is wonderful!

Like Aidan said, they may know the material but not be very good at applying! They do have good stuff though!

I've had really good luck at the MAC store--You buy $50 worth of makeup and they will do your whole face. Just an idea!

I'd rather do MAC. I get crazy breakouts with Mary Kay products. I agree with Courtney R!!!

I won a "make-over" from a Mary Kay consultant at a bridal show and all it was was her telling me how to apply the make-up myself (which was no different than I already do). I don't think the make-up quality was any better than what you can buy at the store, but that is just my opinion.

    Mac Cosmetics--http://www.maccosmetics.com

They are often in Nordstrom and Dillards if they don't have a store where you live. They are so much fun! Many times, I go in there and pretend to be clueless about makeup (which isn't that far from the truth!) and they will help me with doing eyes, whatever!

    Check them out!

I would hire someone who went to beauty school. It shouldnt be hard to find one who will come to you. To me its well worth the money and you will get products specifically meant to look good in photos and last all day. Mary Kay is just regular makeup.

This was a route I had considered but instead I found beauty school graduate that specialized in airbrush...SOOO glad I did! Foundation makes me so greasy normally and I didnt want that for my wedding. The airbrush stayed on perfect the whole night.

I am having a cosmetology student apply my make-up. I have my trial about 2 weeks before the wedding.

I have done Mary Kay, they taught me how to apply my make-up myself as Stephanie described. Not sure how that would work out for you if you are hvaing them apply the make-up because I didn't even know the cinsultants did that!
