Maid of Honor for 2nd Wedding

Katherine, on April 3, 2022 at 12:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17
I am a 35 F getting married for the second time in Feb. my first marriage was a complete disaster that happed over 13 years ago and I’m really viewing this wedding as the first and last real time I’m getting married. At the first wedding I made my sister the MOH. She didn’t do an awful job but we have never had the best relationship and there were some important things she didn’t take care of last time. This go round I want to have my best friend fill the roll. Is this taboo? I welcome any opinions as to how one might feel if they were a sister that didn’t get asked to serve as MOH twice? My sister and I have a better relationship now that we had then but she also lives out of state . Thanks in advance!

I don't think this would be an issue. You can let your sister just relax and enjoy the day as a guest. Do you think it would bother her if you don't choose her?

Anyone can be your MOH. I've also been married twice. The first time my sister was MOH because I thought it was the right thing to do and we were still really young (I was 22, she was 19). We haven't had a good relationship at all as adults so I asked my best friend to be my MOH when I married my husband.

I think it would bother her if I didn’t include her in the wedding party at all. My dad recently remarried and didn’t have any of the (adult) children in the wedding party and I still don’t think she has forgiven him for it. However I’m perfectly fine with her being a bridesmaid. Just not the MOH

This is almost exactly the situation I’m in! Did you ask your sister if she would be ok being just a bridesmaid first? Or just ask your friend to be the MOH? I’m trying to decide if I need to have a whole conversation with her about this or not.

I didn't chose either sister in my family or bestfriend because my sister and I have had a close relationship either because she had done some disaster's things happened. But first my mom sakes and almost 16 or 17 yrs that we haven't spoken nor seen each other. And my bestfriend was giving off jealous and negative vibes. I was about to invite her to my dress shopping last year. Just from some convo was always well I will have this problem no do this and a few years ago her boyfriend/baby father had passed we all were close. So at first I let it go and forever since then she had turn every date or possibility of a new beginning. And I get it it take a while to deal with a death of a love one. But she seemed genuinely happy for me but then every time I tried to show here something she had something negative to say. So I didn't want a negativity at my bridal appointment. Then I asked if this too much I won't talk or bring it up if it's hard for you. But then she bring it up and then told me that she is living out her wedding thru us. I don't want that

I can understand completely! I have another friend I used to be close to who I’m not even asking to be in the bridal party for similar reasons. Drama, negativity, smart mouth and always running it etc. I feel like inviting her is asking for all kinds of drama that I don’t want.

I didn't talk to her about it. I figured if she was going to cause drama over not being asked it was going to happen no matter what. I also have spent a lot of time working on not taking responsibility for other people's feelings.

I need to work on that myself honestly. It’s hard but necessary.

Well I did try to consider other feels but when you are bleating try to always trying to out do me or trying to just be on my coattails and always to be center of attention. This has always been her MO. So she thinks or if she is getting married and am to so she can just have our mom under her thumb. My mom has been or wanted to be part of my wedding planning. When it comes to family members or friends someone is always have some reasons for something even it isn't revalvent

I’m not sure what you were expecting of your MOH. she really only needed to get the dress.

In any case, I don’t think you’re obligated to ask her again.

I don't think you have to ask her to be your MOH but only you know how that is going to affect the relationship between you two. If you think she would be happy just being a bridesmaid then that would be good Smiley smile.

Typically the MOH has a bit of a leadership role in the Bridal party. They often are in charge of the bachelorette party and bridal shower as well as leading the rest of the bridesmaids throughout the planning process and on the day of the wedding.

Yes but all of that is optional. Doesn’t mean someone was a bad MOH if that didn’t happen. Anyone going to the wedding can throw a party for the wedding couple.

MOH should be someone you want to specifically mark their positive and ongoing involvement in your life.

I never said she was a bad MOH.... I said there were things she committed to taking care of that she didn't take care of. Doesn't matter who it is, if you tell someone (Bride or not) that you will take care of it and it doesn't get taken care of then that is unnecessary stress for me. Especially if it isn't communicated on the front end so someone else can pick up the slack. I also stated that our relationship was strained so that whole "positive and ongoing involvement in my life" part you mentioned also doesn't apply. Thanks for commenting though

Are you planning on asking/talking to her soon? You have a bit of time before you need to ask her if you aren't getting married till Feb next year so I guess you have some time to think about things Smiley smile
