Let Them Eat Cake!! 🍰

Chrysta, on January 7, 2021 at 1:39 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 24

Ok, so my fiance and I were going through our wedding binder last night, just making sure we are still onboard with all our plans/decisions since having to postpone. When I skipped past the cake section he laughed at me because he knows the cake designs are off the table because of my "neurosis" of having to make the design reflect the flavor of the cake. I don't know why, but I just have to make the cake look like it tastes! To me, it's like being served a piece of chicken, but biting into it and realizing it's fish... your taste buds just aren't ready for it! LOL If I see a bright colored cake, I'm automatically thinking it's fruity. If it's white, I'm assuming vanilla or almond. And if it's dark colored, you better bet I'm gonna be disappointed if it isn't something rich like chocolate or coffee! Am I the only weirdo that's doing this?? I’m curious how everyone chose their cake designs. Did you just choose the same colors as your wedding? Will the design be a reflection of the vibe/aesthetic of your reception? Will you be using the same flowers that are in your bouquet/centerpieces? Or will the design of the cake reflect the flavor inside?

We’re having a simple white cake so that the main stars, Our DnD mini figures and Dragon, can shine! Since our wedding is DnD themed we completely based it off of our DnD campaign with custom mini’s!

My fiance and I went on Pinterest one afternoon, and looked at a bunch of pictures of cakes. He picked out a few styles that he liked best, and we're planning to combine a few ideas for our cake. It'll be the same colors as our wedding colors, though mostly white with a little bit of blue. Not sure about what flowers will be on the cake, since we're still struggling with what our wedding flowers will be (SO thankful we now have plenty of extra time to figure it out!), but we trust that our cake baker will make it look great! Here are the inspiration pictures we picked.Let Them Eat Cake!! 🍰 1

We're thinking of getting a chocolate naked cake!

We like the look of a naked cake with no icing on the outside (we aren't icing people), and have some fruit decorating it! We also like how it looks with very minimal icing covering it, with some sprigs of greenery to help separate the tiers!

We haven't talked much about flavors yet, but I'm a sucker for raspberry and dark chocolate! That or cherries and dark chocolate!

Browsed Pinterest and Instagram to see what was pretty. The cake inside usually is whatever is tasty and has nothing to do with the outside design at all.

For us, fondant and drip/naked cakes are off the table. Buttercream only which can be decorated in a plethora of creative ways. Definitely plan to have metallic/luster dust for a glitter effect. Not sure yet what florals/decorations but it will be along the same lines as the decor elsewhere.

We opted out of the traditional wedding cake, as we didn’t like the flavors! We did bundt cakes instead, with a two tiered bundt cake to cut, and a cake topper that was Grey (which did match our decor!) Let Them Eat Cake!! 🍰 4

Husband and I are both not fans of fondant nor tons of buttercream. Therefore, we decided on a semi naked cake. However, I did want it nicely decorated (and we won our cake, so may as well make it worth the winning!), so it will have accents of gold foil, a gold trip on the top tier, macarons, and our florist will provide flowers similar to our centerpiece flowers. The top tier will be very similar to the picture provided, with the other three tiers with just flowers and foil. We didn't get to enjoy it for our wedding, but we're looking forward to enjoying it for our reception this November!

We're doing a chocolate tier (with chocolate icing) and an almond tier (with vanilla icing and sliced almonds) and a metal cake topper. Basically we just tasted cakes and picked flavors and went from there but it ended up matching our rustic theme and will be a little ombre. It will sit on a big wood round that I got at Joann's and we've got quite a lot of other wooden elements in our invitations and the barn that our reception is at so it felt right to just have the shades of brown.

I like the idea of minimizing the design of the cake in order to allow your unique cake topper to be the star

We are skipping cake /cake cutting... we are going with cupcakes that are vanilla with raspberry filling/icing on them. having a friend make them for us, she did them for a mutual friend's wedding back in June 2020 and they were AMAZING!!!

That’s cool that the design represent both you and your fiancé‘s likes. I really like the subtle ombre in that first picture

If you do the full-on naked cake, make sure you share pictures! I’ve never actually seen a truly naked cake before. I have seen semi-naked cakes, and I am a huge fan!

That’s what I’m wondering!.. do most people completely disregard the flavor when choosing the exterior color/design?! When I think about it, it makes sense to have the cake match some aspect of the wedding.. but for some reason I just can’t bring myself to NOT decorate the cake according to its flavors 😆

Well it sounds like you’ve actually hit all the aspects! It will tie in perfectly with the aesthetic of the wedding, plus the outside will match the flavors!

Vanilla/raspberry is one of my favorite combinations. My SIL did that combo for her wedding shower and it was ah-mazing!

From what I have seen as a guest at many weddings, no one ever matches the inside of the cake to the outside. Even bakers say pick whatever flavor your guests will enjoy and have a pretty but tasty outside that fits your personal preference. They may pick chocolate or red velvet because they love those flavors but the outside is not chocolate icing or red airbrush.

In the rare case they do match them, it's generally a non-edible cake for a fancy photo shoot or cake decorating competition.

I’ll def. include a pic in our BAM! I love the look of a truly baked cake with a little powder sugar dusting and fresh fruit. 😋

Our florist decorated our cake with the same type of flowers used in the bouquets, centerpieces, chuppah, and other floral decor.
