LDS church wedding

Jenna , on April 5, 2017 at 11:16 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

I am a LDS (Mormon) and as of right now my boyfriend is not. We are estimating on getting married in about 4 years (due to personal issues and financial problems) and he is thinking about starting the process on converting. However, if he doesn't, the wedding and reception would be held at the local Mormon church. I have been hoping on getting married in the chapel, but some people have said you can't, while others have said you can. So, I was wondering if any of you LDS brides or people who have attended LDS weddings, or even if you are Mormon yourself, know if we can get married in the chapel? Also, what are the decor guidelines? Will I still be able to have pew decorations and flower petals from the flower girl? I have just 200 people coming from my side of the family alone and none of the other rooms are big enough for all the people...

I think it would be best for you to contact your local church and ask them the rules.

I know in the Catholic church rules can vary by diocese, so the LDS couples on here may not be able to give you accurate information.

I'm not sure about the decorations. You can however get married in the chapel if he converted. I myself am converting. We will be married in my church first since we are living in sin at the moment. Then I will convert fully and be baptized Mormon. Then we can have a ceremony in the chapel since it is for eternity. ??

So I am not mormon but know quite a lot about the mormon religion. And in order to be sealed in a temple, both people have to be confirmed members of the LDS church with active Temple recommends. I believe after conversion, it can take a while to get a temple recommend. From what I know, it means that you are both living in accordance with LDS doctrine (i.e. tithing, chastity, no alcohol, etc.) and have repented for past sins. Also, only family members who also have a temple recommend can attend the wedding in the temple, which means that his family will most likely not be able to see the sealing ceremony itself. A lot of my mormon friends have had ring ceremonies afterwards, just prior to the reception, to that non LDS family members can see some sort of ceremony. There is a book at Deseret Books that a few friends have used, called Your LDS Wedding Planner. I would look into that if I were you. And also talk to your Bishop since he would probably have more answers.

My FH and I were going to get married in his Mormon church. Because at the time he was going to have a best man that was a heavy drinker and you can't smoke on the property, we decided not to have it at the LDS church. We don't drink but don't really feel comfortable having them in the church.

Yes as far as the Temple once you two prove you abide by their rules and beliefs, you can exchange vows in there.

The sisters do not push our engagement. Not all LDS members are the same.

@HeidiH you can only get married at the church because you're "living in sin"?is that because you're not Mormon? That's new lol

I grew up LDS. My mother and both sisters have been married at the church building. We have always been told the ceremony cannot be done in the chapel. Both my mother and oldest sister were married in the relief society room and we moved to the gym for the reception. My other sister had both the ceremony and reception in the gym.

I think people are getting confused between LDS chapel and LDS temple - totally different.

Anyone can attend a wedding ceremony in an LDS chapel and I believe your FH should be fine if he hasn't converted but this does not mean you are "sealed" as they say. My friend is not LDS and got married in an LDS chapel because it was free.

If you want to get married in the temple, that's a long process but I think he could receive a temple recommend in 4 years. Temple marriages can only be viewed by members of the church who are considered temple worthy and over 18 years old.

As for decor, that is going to depend on your bishop/ward.

Thank you for all the responses Smiley smile I didn't want to go and ask since we weren't planning on getting married for at least 4 years at the most. My church administration is on the stricter end and if they knew we were thinking of marriage, they would push us to get married. And Heidi, as far as I was taught, mormons believe that only temple marriages are for eternity, If you get married at the chapel, it's considered temporary. I was asking about getting married at the church and not the temple, but if my boyfriend shows more interest in converting, by the time we get married we might get married in the temple. My mother was married in the chapel and she was pregnant at the time, but other people have said it's no longer allowed, so I was trying to find more information in it.

As far as I know, non members are allowed to go to weddings held at the church, but not the temple for purity reasons. I know all too well of how much the church pushes for you to obey rules how they see fit. I don't even want to bring up that I'm thinking of marriage to the bishop at my current ward, because already my "high standing" Mormon family members already interrogate me and my sister on my relationship with him and if we are still "pure". When I brought it up before at my old ward, I was constantly asked if I was sure, and if I wanted to go on a mission first, even though I can't with my health and that has been stated several times to the bishopric. Thanks everyone Smiley smile

    Jenna:

I am getting married July 8th at the church building. My fiancée is not a member. My bishop gave us the option of the chapel (for a bigger wedding) or the relief society room (for a smaller, intimate setting). There is no reason it cannot be held in the chapel - they hold boy scout ceremonies (we had non-members in boy scouts) and seminary graduations in there, why not a wedding?? No reason you cannot do it in there.
