Last minute backyard wedding

Drew, on June 1, 2016 at 10:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 30

My girlfriend and I will be getting married 6/18/16 and like the procrastinators we are, it's 3 weeks away and haven't stated planning anything. Wanting to have 20 or so people and hosting in our backyard. At 10 am. Girlfriend wants to have a donut bar? It's going to be maybe an hour long for everything as we are leaving for our weekend getaway soon after it ends. Super casual and laid back. What should the ceremony be like? And after? Also should we hire a photographer or have a friend take casual pics for us? I've never been to a wedding so I'm so lost. I'm also worried about it being "awkward" since there's not many people we are inviting. ANY ideas or pics would be so appreciated! Also, we are 20 and 22 and are lesbians #lovewins so please don't comment at all if you are going to be hateful.

Congratulations! Don't worry, there are a lot of LGBTQ people/supporters on these forums, myself included.

First thing you need to do is make sure you have an officiant! They book up really fast, usually months in advance. Also, remember if you're going to feed guests (which, btw, I LOVE the donut bar idea!), don't try to make any food yourself.

Is your backyard big enough to host 20 people? If not, a lot of venues have "elopement" packages that are relatively inexpensive.

    Good luck and happy planning!

Worse comes to worse with the officiant, you can tye the knot at the courthouse before or after the "ceremony" and have a close friend or family member have you exchange vows in front of everyone. Congrats!

    Congratulations!

I'll echo PP - do you have an officiant booked? You may be able to find one on short notice, but this is the beginning of their busy season, so start looking now! I also think a slightly longer timeframe may work better for you - maybe 2-3 hours instead of 1? That way, nothing's rushed and you get to enjoy the day.

As for photographers, I found that many offer "elopement packages" or price per hour (as opposed to the full wedding package). If you can fir it in your budget, I'd recommend looking into it.

    Congrats! You guys are adorable!

Same thoughts as above. I do know a few brides that pulled off an amazing, fun, casual wedding in a few weeks, so it can be done!

Put the word out to your circle of friends. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to help you put this together!

I'm sorry I should have mentioned that! Yes we do have an officiant booked already. We've been engaged since July 12 of last year and our whole plan this entire time was to "elope" and spend our whole wedding budget on a road trip honeymoon but we had to move unexpectedly 2 weeks ago and that with all the circumstances around that, drained our entire budget and changed the entire plan. Since we can't do our big honeymoon, I wanted to have like a wedding celebration with our close friends and family. We have a pretty big backyard and it's pretty with trees and everything that will fit everyone. I just didn't know if it was weird or not to have a dance and toast and stuff since it's a morning wedding.

Well I'm a dancer so I'll dance anytime of day lol but you know your crowd better.

I've been to some very nice day time wedding.

I second looking into a photographer to do pictures for an hour or two.

    Donut bar! Love it!

Get some champagne for toast and a small selection of wine and finger foods and have a blast! Congrats!

    You guys are adorable!

You don't HAVE to have anything at your wedding you don't want. Have a donut bar with coffee (and some irish whiskey or something)! Since it's so small and casual you can pretty much do whatevs just make sure people have something to nosh on.

As far as a photograph, it depends on your budget and if you can find one for such a short time. We were having this problem so what I think we're going to do is have a friend (who is a profesh. photog, or hire a student) to take photos (Our whole thing is only going to be like 2 hours, super casual) with a camera we're renting. You can rent a 1k camera for a week for like $90 and that's with insurance. Also, if you're into it, consider getting some Instax cameras, they're basically hipster poloroids and super cute (and you can then bring it on your weekend trip to keep snapping pics). I've had one for years and break it out every time there's a get together.

    Hey there and welcome!!

Congratulations on getting married!! Smiley laugh

I think the doughnut bar sounds amazing. (Can I come?) I agree about having mimosas or bellinis with the doughnuts for toasts.

don't feel obligated to have anything in your wedding that you don't want. We didn't do a first dance, a cake cutting, the bouquet or garter toss. We didn't really have dancing either (afternoon outdoor wedding) but we did have music playing.

She's your Fiancée not your girlfriend. Photographers will not be easy to find at all. Also do restaurant catering

First off congrats and welcome! We love everyone here (unless you're having a cash bar) so you don't have to worry about the judgment you face elsewhere!

It won't be awkward at all! You're gonna be with your family and friends so everyone will have a good time. I really like the donut bar idea because let's be serious...who doesn't like donuts?!?!? Someone else suggested other brunch-y items and I second that. Maybe some muffins, croissants, etc. I would definitely look into hiring a photographer just because pictures have always been important to me.

Be sure to come back and do a BAM so we can see it after!

Congrats - I would suggest throwing in a fruit tray to go with donuts and mimosas!

Congrats! I love the idea of coffee & donuts & mimosas! If you've got the officiant booked and have/or will soon get the marriage license, I think you can pull it together in 3 weeks. Some of my couples have booked me on a couple of days notice -- but, of course, kept things simple.
