KWR: Wisdom teeth

AAK, on June 26, 2017 at 2:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 61

So I've waited far too long on getting my wisdom teeth removed and now all four of them have poked through. One in particular is growing sideways and the other one is growing into my cheek. To say the pain is excruciating is an understatement. I go in Thursday for a consultation to figure out what we can do and when but when I asked her about a schedule of how soon I could get in to get these son's of bitches removed she said i'd be looking end of August to early September. My wedding is the end of September and i'm just curious for those who have had their teeth removed/pulled how long were you swollen for? I just don't want to get my teeth removed beginning of September and then have a swollen ass mouth for my wedding pictures. Priorities, amirite?

I was swollen for a couple weeks, but I ended up getting a minor infection and more pain than usual so it was swollen longer than usual.

ETA: Dry sockets are what I had - @Justine reminded me of the words. Definitely do not drink from a straw, I was young and stupid and didn't listen!

So I don't think you'd still have bruising or swelling if you had them done at the beginning of September. My bruising and swelling took about a week to go away.

That being said, I still don't think I'd have it done that close to the wedding. There's no way they can get you in any sooner? You have already spoken with the oral surgeon about dates or your regular dentist?

It shouldn't be more than a week 2 tops. But I would look into another doctor. Neither time I went to get mine pulled did I wait that long to be seen.

There can be complications related- such as infections like Anne mentioned (they do give you an antibiotic and I didn't have any issues- but shit happens) and dry socket. You have to be really really careful and gentle with your mouth and watch what you eat.

I definitely recommend having general anesthesia for the procedure if you can afford it. I had 4 impacted teeth removed at the same time and am so thankful I was put under.

I agree w/ Chivy- I only waited about 2 weeks after consult to have mine out.

    Ok I'm done now haha

She said without knowing the situation right now it could be that long. I'm hoping when I go in and they actually see what i'm dealing with they will get me in sooner. The one is in so much pain that it's causing me to have a fever and feel sick. I go in Thursday for a consultation and then we go from there so i'm hoping they can give me some dates otherwise yeah, i'll probably have to look elsewhere. The idea of getting them removed close to the wedding scares me.

I would think if you had X-rays taken the doc have a good idea of what needs to get done. I had mine pulled at 18 I was bruised and swolen for a week maybe 10 days. My kicker was my mouth was really sensitive to cold and hot for quite a while after the swelling went down. Not something I think you would want for your wedding and honeymoon.

I only had swelling the first day, but I kept ice on them constantly for the first two days. But when they did mine, they hit a nerve and so half of my lips were numb for about two weeks.

I had swelling and slight bruising for about a week. Since you are having so much pain, I would call around to other oral surgeons and see if they could get you in sooner. FH had one coming in sideways and was able to get them out within a week of his consultation.

One is definitely impacted and the other is digging into my cheek (both on the same side). I can confidently say that this is probably not something they will want to wait on. It hurts like a mother.

I think you will be fine. I am the BIGGEST BABY in the world when it comes to my mouth, they had to give me valium to even get me to show up the day of my wisdom teeth removal. I was fine the next day. I had my High school graduation the 2nd day and I was fine. I was a little sensitive when having to smile for photos but there were no issues. The 3rd day I was the most sore, but I never had to take pain pills after the 3rd day. I think within 2 weeks you'll easily be back to yourself.

I got mine done a few years back about five days before Christmas. Luckily I had no complications or swelling. I was eating Christmas dinner with everyone and was off the pain meds and just using Tylenol after a day. I'd say max would be about four weeks if you had issues. Are there other doctors/offices you can go to?

The good thing about them already coming in is that you will likely have them pulled, not cut, which is MUCH less painful. I pushed off getting mine out and that's what happened to me. Most people that get them cut are on an ice cream, mashed potatoes, popsicle kind of diet for a few days with lots of swelling. The day I got mine out, I was eating French fries and baked beans. The next day I ate pizza. Also my face was swollen less than a day.

I think you'll be fine Smiley smile

I had mine removed over 2 appointments. I was swollen, sore and even a little bruised for about 2wks the first time. The 2nd time around was a whole other story, I caught an infection due to dentist negligence. It got so bad with 24hrs my throat began to swell shut, took an ambulance to the hospital, had minor surgery to drain the infection, spent thr next week in the hospital. All in all it took 5wks to be completely healed from that endeavour (not this is not typical but afraid to do it that close to my wedding

I was lucky enough to have 6 wisdom teeth. Two were impacted. One ended up with a cavity and was causing me pain. The dentist actually pulled it out in the office with just novocaine. The other five I had removed a few months later. Minimal swelling. Dry sockets are more common on the bottom teeth and if you smoke. End of August seems like a while to wait though.

This is really different for everyone. I had all 4 removed at one time, and the bottom two were impacted. But I had no swelling or bruising, and hardly even hurt at all after the surgery. I took the first pain pill at home just in case, but I was back to normal the next day. Obviously I was still careful with eating and drinking, but I felt completely fine.

I had 4 taken out...bad enough where I was hospitalized for the procedure and they had to cut upper and lower all the way across my mouth with stitches, etc. I looked like a chipmunk for a while and remember enjoying thanksgiving sucking liquids through a straw, but even with that all the swelling and bruising went down within two to three weeks.

I procrastinated so long on my wisdom teeth because I am afraid of going under. Mine were not impacted just no room and were going to push all my other teeth if I didn't get them taken out. I only did laughing gas and local and I was fine. I was only swollen for about 3 days and had no pain only a little bit after the local anesthetic wore out. Everyone is different and I also couldn't eat for like a month. Had to gradually bring back solid foods so I'd get it done asap. Also date twin Smiley smile

ETA: I had them removed last July.

Noticeably swollen? 2-3 days. Still feeling sore for about a week. But it highly varies from person to person, I had a friend who had her wisdom teeth removed and was back at work the next day looking 100% normal.
