Knee or tea length?

Leanna, on May 13, 2013 at 11:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

Uh oh - I am so torn on what length dress to ask my girls to get. I thought I wanted them in knee length but the more I see tea length I am beginning to really like the look. The other thing is a lot of the knee length dresses aren't actually knee length they are much shorter than I thought they would be. If they could find a dress that is actually knee length that would be great.

my wedding is end of march - it's indoors but its new England and I am afraid they will be cold. When I asked them if they wanted long or knee length they all agreed knee length would be better. What do you ladies think?

They are all picking their own style - I am just asking them to pick a dress in a particular color, fabric, and length (now to figure out what to do)

I as a bride am wearing tea length for my dress (so it doesnt get stepped on/and so i can walk lol), therefore my girls would have to be in floor or ankle length. I am going with those options for modesty reasons. b/c I don't want anything showing which is also why everyone including myself is having straps and if they dont approve then they r booted out of the bp. Afterall its my day and I don't want any unmodest behavior considering theres gonna also be like 20 kids and like 40 church friends.

Knee length is more universally flattering. Tea length can throw some people's proportions off and make them look chopped off.

As a BM I would rather wear a knee length. We tried on tea length dresses for a wedding I'm in and we all felt like Mary Poppins. It definitely DID NOT work for all body types. It was so awkward.

I have to agree with Pan on this over what Ann said. I personally find tea length dresses difficult for many women to pull off. I know that I both look and feel awkward as hell in one of them.

If they all prefer knee length over tea length, I'd stick with that. If you are really leaning towards tea length, maybe suggest to your girls to get together and try on a couple styles of each and then decide which you guys would all prefer.

We were going with knee length dresses, but after seeing them on my maids, only 1 had the "knees" for it. After trying on the tea length, everyone agreed that was the best option for us. It's a bit harder to find tea length styles but there is also the option to hem a floor length to tea length and some companies offer extra length to shorter dresses so that could be a possiblility as well.

We did tea length for a party I was in, but apparently not all tea lengths are the same? Each bm had a different "tea length" and it just looked a little off. I say knee just to make it easier.

I prefer knee length, tea length tends to make most women's legs look stubby. I would just specify on the body where the dress should hit so there is some consistency. Like last time I was a Bmaid the bride wanted the dresses to be hemmed 1/4" below the knee.

You could go with just below the knee...there where I like my dresses and skirts to hit, so that my legs still look normal, but my knees are covered. I have not seen the BM dress on the tall BM, but the 3 shorter girls (all between 5'2" and 5'4") the dresses need hemmed a couple inches.

We found a dress (yes, we all agreed on the same one) that is "cocktail length" so it's in between knee and tea length. It hits my girls just below their knee so that it's modest and appropriate for the feel of my wedding, but still flattering to all of them - they range in height from 5'2" to 5'7".

I am petite, and tea length dresses make us look 2 inches tall and like we have no legs. Depending on where you order from and how tall your BMs are, the dresses may come long enough to be hemmed so that they hit at the knee. If you give them the option and remind them of the possible weather issues and they still say they prefer shorter to a floor length gown, then they will really only have themselves to blame in March. But I find that my lower legs don't get that cold compared to my upper body, so maybe they will be ok even if it's cold?

I also asked my girls to alter theirs to just below the knee. I told them it should hit the bottom of their knee cap and we shouldn't be able to see their knees.

I think "knee length" would bring some pretty short dresses in and depending on how light of a material the dress is, could make them poofy. If you made them short, the material wouldn't weigh it down enough to lay quite as flat anymore.

However if you just specify "tea length" they will probably all come back with it hemmed to a different point. Be specific... an inch above the knee, an inch below, two inches below, etc.

I'm only 5'2" so tea length comes to a really awkward spot on my legs. I have this issue about kneecaps...they're just not attractive. I would suggest cocktail length as a happy medium.

My dress is tea length so BMs have dresses that are knee length.

Thank you so much ladies :-) I will just specify that I'd like them to have knee length to just below the knee. If they can't find one that is long enough I'll pay the difference for extra fabric or to have a longer one hemmed. I think that's fair. Another reason why I LOVE WW. You'd think with a newborn I would of had other things to think about at almost midnight lol
