Kay jewelers

Kristen, on May 22, 2016 at 10:22 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 55

So my FH has bought me two rings from Kays a butterfly ring with our birthstones for Christmas and then my engagement ring! Sad to say both rings have had issues. The butterfly chipped and stone came out and then my engagement ring which I have had for a month the diamond came out Smiley sad it's getting fixed but does anyone else have this issue from kays? I've talked to friends who all got from Zales and Jareds don't have this problem. I had it a month and I don't wear it at home. Only when I am out in public or work (which isn't heavy labor work) I am a little upset that we've had this problem with both rings from them.. so we are not getting wedding bands through kays. It upsets me he spends hundreds of dollars there for a ring to break a month later Smiley sad

There's a lawsuit against kays about this and them losing people's rings while getting repairs. Also zales and Jared are owned by kays.

My old wedding set was from Kays and for 9 years I wore the same ring with no problems. I have a sapphire ring from Kays too I have worn everyday for the last 7 years and not a single issue. My current e ring is from Marks and Morgan which is basically the same thing and no issues yet. Sorry youre having this problem.... hopefully getting it fixed is the end of it

My promise ring was from Zales (worn for about 3 years) and I had a band díamond that would come out almost every other month! My BFF got her engagement ring from Zales and when she resized it the band snapped in half.

I had almost this exact same issue with Zales. My stones were loose within a month. Took forever to come back and then a couple months later they were loose again (which Zales denied they were). I refused to send my ring out again so I went to a family owed small business jeweler and had him inspect it. Low and behold, all of the diamonds were loose and he was able to fix them right then and there, free of charge because he understood my frustration with Zales. Oh, and there is also a chip on my band in the inside (no idea how that happens) so I'm eventually going to have to get it redipped. My fiancé had to pay to get an extra warranty with all the crap that Zales has put us through and now I'm just going to go through this small business for all of my ring purposes. So moral of my story, all big chain jewelers can have issues like ours. But other times, they can be wonderful.

"Hundreds of dollars" does not buy a lifetime piece of jewelry. (Sorry, not meant to be insulting. If you love the ring, that's all that matters! Just be realistic about your expectations.) My ring is a Tolkowsky diamond from Kay and it came with a lifetime warranty. I've had zero issues with it because it's a high-quality piece.

MauiWowie: Uhm, so are you saying the ring that I preferred is essentially worthless and no good for daily/lifetime wear because it didn't cost thousands? Because that's really not how jewelry works. Most of the time, a ring with a gold setting will be a few hundred, and go up from there according to the stone. Last time I checked, the stone doesn't determine the durability of a piece of jewelry. Platinum may set people back a little more than gold, but again, still a few hundred for the setting, and then the real money being for the stone.

ETA: Chains like Kay, Zales, and Jared (who, like pp said, are owned by the same company,) are well known for issues with their jewelry and repairs, including even switching high quality stones for lower quality ones during cleanings. I wonder how high in the air your nose would be if that happened to you?

No personal experience, but a friend bought an anniversary ring from Kay's and spent over $5k on it! However, it was assessed, by two different jewelers, for less than $3k. I also worked with someone who once worked for Kay's. More than once, when jewelry was sent out for repairs it was lost. They usually did not tell the owner, just gave them a similar replacement!

I didn't get my e-ring from any of these stores, but I lost a small diamond couple weeks ago after only having it since February 21st. The woman who took it in for the repairs assured me that it is normal to lose a few diamonds over the life of a ring, which is why things like insurance/coverage/etc exists.

I'm covered for any losses or damages, which is just a policy that store has.

Like I said, it wasn't Kay/Jared/Zales/etc, but that might bring you some peace of mind.

Again, the sentiment of the ring is what's important, but quality costs money. This is true of most things, not just jewelry. A plain silver band is no better than a huge stone in regards to sentimental value, and a fancy, expensive ring doesn't matter -- only the promise that comes with it. However, to blame a whole chain for the quality of a single piece isn't fair. Every time I take my ring in for cleaning and inspection and when it came back from being sized, I get to see the laser-inscribed serial number to prove my ring is the exact one which was purchased for me. I never have to ask; the store just shows it to me. I have had a great experience with my ring from Kay jewelers, and I'd recommend them to others.

We had terrible luck with Kay. DH's wedding band took forever to come in and they still ordered the wrong size. We just returned it and went to Jared to buy him a new ring. Kay is terrible. Bad service and poor quality products.

Many of the big box jewelry retailers like that have problems. Frankly, the quality just isn't the same. It doesn't mean it is necessarily poor, but you tend to get more for your money at smaller local stores, etc (believe it or not). Regardless however, it must be very upsetting that this happened with your ring. I'm sorry to hear you are going through this.

Kristen I'm so sorry this happened! It's so hard having to wait for rings to be fixed Smiley sad But all jewelry, no matter how expensive, will have these issues (my diamond is loose now and I'm super afraid of it falling out!). However I understand your concern with Kay's and I would suggest a mom and pop style jewellers; they are much more personable and they have a great deal of experience.

I have 2 pieces of jewlery from Kay: open heart necklace with FH and mine birthstones, and open heart ring with FH's birthstone and my favorite stone. There was only a problem with the ring, one of the stones fell out and they charged him for a fix so he bought the stone separate and took it somewhere else for cheaper and we've had no problems since.

My new e-ring is from Zales and we've had 0 issues, I've had it for about half a year now. The band just has a few scratches on it, but very faint.

Like it was stated before, there have been numerous lawsuits against them lately for issues, but the same Jared's and Zales are in fact owned by Kay as well so I imagine there's equal risk.

Read an article about this on Buzzfeed. Look into the lawsuits.

My engagement ring is from Kay and it's been good so far but I definitely will not be taking it there for ANYTHING even though it has the protection plan. I'll fork over a few extra bucks if it means that my ring will come back in the same condition I sent it off to be repaired in.

Our rings came from Kays Jewelers. A diamond came out of my engagement ring but they fixed it and I haven't had any problems since.
