Just Beer and Wine or Cash Bar? Tacky?

Julie, on June 13, 2011 at 8:21 PM

My parents are footing most of the bill, but are afraid if we do beer and wine that it will cost a fortune. ($350/keg, $24/bottle of house wine - approx. 100 guests). My mom really wants to do a cash bar, but I think that's tacky. Just wondering what other people's opinions are...

Apparently Glenn and I are on the same thread at the same time commenting exactly the same thoughts... scary lol

I wouldn't mind a wine-only wedding, or a beer-only, etc. I think you have to give some sort of free alcohol to your guests, but I'm not too picky about whether it's wine, beer, spirits, or Jungle Juice and an ice luge. Even a beer slide works*

    *What? I went to UNC.

We were going to do an ice luge with a specialty drink. I don't remember why we decided against it though!

Hey now, I never said anyone hated me and I never said any of you were drunks. Smiley smile I was just asking a simple question.

Let's all agree that different types of bars (open, cash, open/cash combo) vary by region/friend/family circles, and that everyone has different opinions/views on bar etiquette. Smiley smile

I'm distressingly sober right now. Hey, Kathy, do you think an overripe tomato could give me a buzz? Or just a tummyache?

This thread always brings out the best of WW! Lol

@Glenn, I didn't see any Crown Royal on that list. I'm truly disappointed!

I actually did a poll of my bridal party and everyone decided against Crown (I was shocked because it's one of my groomsmen's favorite).

Glenn, in my circle, people drink wine. Sooooo, offering wine is what is expected. If I lived in an area where Rum was the norm, Rum would have been served. If it was an area where most guests drank Vodka, Vodka would have been the drink of choice.

I live in wine country, wine is the main drink of choice.

Calling me a bad host, serving what the majority of guests drink, is wrong.

Beer, Wine, and a signature cocktail mixed by the pitcher. No cash bar. You could even personalize this more by serving wine from parts of the country that are meaningful to you, or wine that is named after things you love (lots of dog wines out there, lol). But no cash bars please....

We're doing beer, wine, and a cash bar for those who don't like what we're offering. Most of our friends drink beer, so I don't think it's tacky.
