Just Beer and Wine or Cash Bar? Tacky?

Julie, on June 13, 2011 at 8:21 PM

My parents are footing most of the bill, but are afraid if we do beer and wine that it will cost a fortune. ($350/keg, $24/bottle of house wine - approx. 100 guests). My mom really wants to do a cash bar, but I think that's tacky. Just wondering what other people's opinions are...

We specifically picked a venue that allowed us to bring in our own alcohol as we knew having an open bar was something we knew we wanted to do so we researched it out and came to conclusion we could save money by doing it this way, and we still found a beautiful venue Smiley smile

Kathy, I CHOSE my venue based on the fact that I was able to bring in my own liquor. We met with other venues and we decided that we wanted to bring in our own booze. Sorry, but if you don't provide booze I think you are a bad host, of course cash bar is better than dry wedding.

I wish they would make alcohol illegal Smiley smile Then we wouldn't have such issues anymore.

Ashley, umm, hate to tell you this, but, if you let fruit sit too long on your counter, alcohol happens. ;-)

Prohibition was a raging success the first time around. No clue why we abandoned it...

Exactly Shannon. Wow, I can't believe people actually believe alcohol should be illegal, it's bad enough you need to wait to be 21 to drink it legally.

Glenn, my daughters wedding was NOT a dry wedding. We provided wine and sparkling wine...as stated...I wanted to provide beer by the bride and groom nixed that.

As far as choosing a venue where we could bring our own, in my area, that would result in venues that would still upcharge for bringing ones own.

Every city/state is different on liquor laws. In my state, the state owns all liquor stores and restaurants and venues must purchase from the state controlled stores. Wine and beer are not in liquor stores, so they are easier to BYOB.

Wow I was kidding...did you not read my last post. Sorry...but people shouldn't get so dang worked up over booze. You are defending it like it's going to save your lives.

@Ashley, you have so much to learn in life.

PS, fruit in the fridge, can/will still ferment. ;-)

I don't drink wine and would be completely and totally offended if I was invited to a wedding and they only offered wine, just as I am offended at dry weddings. We repeat the same argument here over and over again and I share Carole's frustrations with the same argument, I'm sure people are tired of hearing my side of it as well. The fact is though that I'm bringing you $100-$200 in cash and/or gifts I expect you to host me well enough by providing me with drinks.

I was just saying that I keep it in the fridge as you said counter. How can you make the assumption that I have "so much to learn in life"?
