ixnay on the idskay?

Ava, on January 29, 2010 at 5:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

How should my FH & I go about asking people to leave their little ones at home? Is it something that should be put on the invitations? We are both dead-set on this point, not cuz we don't like kids but because we want everyone to have a good time and not worry about watching their children the whole night. Any suggestions?

We're not having children at our wedding either. I think there are two good ways to go about it - first is word of mouth. Have your parents/friends that know about your decision spread the word. Second is the way you word your invitation. Instead of addressing it to the smith family, invite Mr. and Mrs. Smith. If you're having inner envelopes, write the couples name "jane and john" on the inner envelope. Traditionally, this is supposed to indicate who is invited to the wedding. But since people don't always look/follow this rule - word of mouth is your best bet!

Just write it on the invitation and on your wedding website:

"While children are a blessing and a joy, we respectfully request an adults only reception [wedding] please"

    or simply

    "Adults only wedding please"

    "Adults only reception to follow"

"Or Adults Only Ceremony & Reception on your invites"

It is not okay to point out who is NOT invited on the invitations.

Just address it to the adults. "Mr and Mrs Jason Smith" instead of "Mr and Mrs Jason Smith, Johnny Smith and Susan Smith."

Some people also like to put "2 seats have been reserved in your honor" on the RSVP cards.

If someone RSVPs for more than the number invited, you need to call and say, "I'm very sorry, but we can only accommodate so many people at our venue, so we are asking that children stay home. But we'd love to get together some other time."

Yeah put it on the invitations i have seen it on invitations before and its not that unusual ... if you dont tell them in advance they will not make plans ahead of time.

I'm doing the same with addresses, but people don't read. I'm going with the RSVP cards - and a note asking them to refrain from adding to their guest count.
