Ivory vs White Wedding Gown

Catjam, on May 3, 2018 at 2:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 36
Ok, I know the significance/meaning of each. My FH and I have lived together for several years, but it's my first wedding. My brother hurt my feeling by saying "You aren't wearing white I hope". Last night and today isn't all I've been thinking about and it hurt my feeling. Is this silly and should I definitely wear ivory?

It is totally 100% your choice what color you wear, an no one really adheres to the virginal meaning anymore. That being said, almost everyone I know including myself ended up in an off-white color. Pure white is really hard to find and is honestly a tough color to wear. I personally went for a blush, but in pictures and in person most people can't tell the difference between a white and an ivory. If I were you I'd be open to the various shades of white and off white and just get whatever color and dress makes you look and feel most like what you envision for your wedding day!

Go dress shopping and decide. Try on each color and see which one looks best on you. Those are such old traditions. My mom said the same thing both times to me. She said clearly you shouldn't wear white. If I looked good in white I would have just to annoy her lol. I honestly think ivory is more flattering on most people but true white does look really good on some. Only way to know is to go shopping Smiley smile

The meanings and traditions of the white wedding dress almost doesn't still exist today. I don't personally like the white because it's really white, but if you want to wear white then do so.
It's no one else's business what you want to wear on your wedding day or why you want to wear it.

Wear whatever you want. Most dresses are in ivory nowadays though. White is hard to pull
off and looks very stark next to ivory. My dress is going to be ivory and it looks perfectly white in pictures.

Where whatever colour you like best. White wedding dresses were traditionally used to display wealth and social status, not your purity so it's really pretty irrelevant

Pick whatever color dress you like. That is silly - there wouldn't be much of a market for white dresses if his comment still applied today!

The tradition of white is gone. I have never been married and I have kept myself for my husband, still, my dress is gold/ivory because it goes much better with my complexion. Wear what is best for you!

Lol there's really no significance to it anymore, since most couples live together before marriage these days, so I'd just ignore your brother, because he has no idea what he's talking about. There's no need to feel hurt by that.

That said, most women look better in ivory than in stark white. Bridal ivory is really closer to white than it is to cream/beige. My dress was ivory and it looked pure white, unless held up next to a true white dress. In fact, my bridal consultant at Kleinfeld told me a lot of designers don't even make dresses in true white anymore, because people don't buy them; most buy ivory.

But wear whatever you want, because it does not matter in the slightest!

Tell your brother to crawl under a rock and stay there. What you and your FH do together is none of his business and you will wear whatever colour you want to wear, traditional or not.

Even when Queen Victoria, the one who started it all, was on the throne, women married wearing their best clothes no matter the colour.

I don't know your brother or how he meant it, but you should tell him (I hope you did) that his remark hurt your feelings.

The white dress tradition came from a family's ability to afford a dress that would only be worn once. White is difficult to keep clean enough to wear multiple times. Most women wore their best dress regardless of the color.

Additionally, the white of the times would have been closer to a contemporary ivory. Without contemporary bleaches natural fibers wouldn't get super white. Most dresses today are made of synthetic fibers, and even though a super white is possible to produce now bridal dresses tend to be warmer whites to light ivory. What the average wedding guest sees as white is likely described as ivory, soft white, diamond white, or some other name by the designer.

So wear what you like, choose something that flatters your complexion, and most importantly pick something that makes you feel beautiful!

FMIL got snarky with me about wearing a white dress because I'm older. Yes, it hurt my feelings, but I'm not going to let her dictate my choices. I actually originally wanted a blush dress, but wound up buying an ivory one. It still looks very white to me.

Sorry that your brother was being hurtful, and you should wear what you feel best in.

You can wear whatever color you want! It’s your wedding day. It doesn’t matter if you’ve lived together or not, been married 10 times or never. Your brother doesn’t have the right to dictate what you wear. I hope he just wasn’t thinking of how that would sound before it came out, and didn’t intentionally mean to hurt your feelings.
