"I've never heard of a woman getting a wedding band AND e-ring"

So, the other day, FH tells me that, in regards to the woman having an engagement ring and then getting a band for the wedding day, that "90% of people don't do that." He is convinced that every married woman he knows only has one ring and he's never heard of anyone having two rings, and that it's...

So, the other day, FH tells me that, in regards to the woman having an engagement ring and then getting a band for the wedding day, that "90% of people don't do that." He is convinced that every married woman he knows only has one ring and he's never heard of anyone having two rings, and that it's just something made up by women wanting more diamonds. Well, that's probably true lol BUT I feel it's the complete opposite!! I've just always been under the impression that it is standard "tradition" that you propose with one ring, and then during your engagement you shop for two bands- why else would they sell wedding sets?- and I know he is WAY over exaggerating in his "facts" but.... Is anyone here deciding to forget the band and just stick with your engagement ring?

I'm not trying to be like "I want two rings, damnit!" because I really wouldn't care either way, I'm just trying to prove that I'm right and he's crazy, hahaha

I have a wrap for my ering that ends up hurting me all of the time so I typically just go with my ering. My wedding band isn't a complete circle. We couldn't get one that was or it wouldn't have fit so the wedding band is a crescent and my engagement ring fits right in. I'd say 90% of the time I'm just wearing my ering though. For my one year, I'm getting just a band with some sort of embellishments. So I could see how he'd think that women only get one ring.

I have never heard of woman using their engagement ring as there wedding band. That said my response is my FH purchase the e ring then getting the wedding band separate. My FH knows there are 2 rings. What I have heard now the new trand is men having e-ring that I heard of. I never heard the ering is being used as wedding band. Wedding bands are more simple

In this country, it's been standard to have an engagement ring and a wedding ring for a whole lot of years! My mother (now 80-something) wore her engagement ring only on special occasions, because it was not a diamond and wasn't able to take the rough wear of daily use. However, she had a plain gold wedding band she always wore. With my first marriage, back in 1977, it was still standard to have a diamond solitaire as the engagement ring, and a plain gold band as the wedding band. It's only more recently that people have begun having wedding rings with stones in them, but the tradition of having two rings has gone on for a long time.

Is your FI from a different country? In many countries, the tradition is to have only one ring, which is worn on the right hand until marriage, and the left hand thereafter.

Nah, he was raised in Florida, so I think he's mostly just clueless on wedding related things, haha.

Princess- FH actually wanted me to get his band early so that he could wear it now, because he didn't lke that I had a ring signifying that I was "off limits" but that he didn't, and he wanted something to wear to show he was seriously spoken for as well. I thought it was pretty sweet though, and I did buy him one of the tungsten bands from jvljewelry. He's just weird all around I guess Smiley smile

I think alot of older people just simply wear their wedding ring now everyday. Its become fashionable to have 2 rings and wear them at the same time but if you think about it, when our parents and grandparents got married - they may not have had enough money for 2 rings so just got the wedding ring. I know that my mum never had an engagement ring from my dad - just a wedding ring but they did elope!!

I found out after I said yes that the set he chose actually had both. So I have my engagement ring for now, and when it comes time I'll have the band that matches. Which is wonderful for me because that saves money in the long run.

Even my grandmother had a wedding band and an engagement ring. The wedding band was for everyday use and the engagement ring was for special occasions.

I always thought you were supposed to get two rings. Your engagement ring, and then while you are engaged before the wedding day you shop for the wedding band. Mine came as a set so i was pretty lucky there, but i still have to go out and shop for a band for my FH. He is a mechanic so i am going to get him a nice ring that he will get at the wedding and wear while he's not at work, then i am going to get him another ring that he can wear at work with no diamonds or anything in it. but yes. 2 rings is right.Smiley smile

@Jamie- my DH doesn't wear a ring at work because it is dangerous. You should probably just stick with the nice ring for after work and not even bother with an at-work ring.

My DH does heating and air, but a mechanic is probably the same way. Plus, when DH took his ring off to wash his hands at work he lost it! Luckily he found it a week later but I was sold on the no-ring-at-work concept.

I have always seen at least SOME women with both, for as long as I can remember. My set dates back to the forties, and it is a matched set, so the concept of 2 rings has definitely been around for a long time.

I do, however, know many married women who choose to wear only a band, and one who used her e-ring as her wedding ring. I think it is really just a personal preference.

I would not have minded one ring, but wear both as they are a matched set. I have pretty simple taste, however, and never wore rings on a regular basis before.

I know some people only use one ring these days but it is traditional to secure your engagement ring with a band closest to your heart. Many are made to go together but you don't need to get the set - my ER is from Tiffany&Co but they didn't have a band I like so we're getting the band elsewhere.

I am actually the one who didn't know I was supposed to have 2 rings. At first, I didn't even want a band. However, after discussing it with my husband and looking into it, I realized that it is a symbol of marriage as opposed to being perpetually engaged. I like my two rings Smiley smile My SIL actually has 5!! She has her engagement and wedding band, then last year she got a set of 3 (with colored stones for her own, her husband's and her daughter's birthstones). It sounds gaudy, but it actually looks really nice. She only wears them once in a while for special occasions.

I have never heard of anyone not getting both an engagement ring and wedding band, so this is news to me. lol Perhaps it is a regional thing? My engagement ring will insert inside of my wedding band, so my e-ring will be wrapped in my w-ring.

Frankly, I think the hubbies should get an engagement and wedding band as well, to even things out. Smiley smile

Ha, I love how clueless men can be. FH's mom had to clue him into this. She told me the story after he proposed. I got a good laugh.

Mine thought it was just the e-ring xD . I had to explain the bands, and he was all for it once I explained. To be fair he's not someone who ever really thought he would fall in love and get married. He didn't even know which hand the ring went on.

I'd say 95 % of americans I know have both an engagement ring and a wedding band. And frankly, the few who only have one, its cause they decided against an engagement rign and just did a wedding band.

@EdieKristen: This article does a good job of explaining why NotFroofy and I decided not to have engagement rings! Each of us has a plain gold wedding band. It lets people know we are married, without buying into the whole thinking that love has to be accompanied by a diamond.
