It's official - Target registries suck!

Mrs. S™, on March 25, 2013 at 10:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

Really, they do. Do your guests a favor and register somewhere else.

My friend had her baby shower this weekend. I went to 2 Targets in the area, and those kiosks with registries didn't work. So one Target employee said "If you have a smart phone, you can find the registry online". Well, duh, Einstein, and then how will the items come off the registry?

So I went back home and printed it out, hoping nobody buys stuff in the meantime. After about 4 hours after the purchase, the items were still on the registry. So I talked to someone in their registry help department who barely spoke English and asked me 18 million security questions, and things were finally marked as purchased. Yay.

FWIW, no, I did not bitch to my pregnant friend.

When I pull up a target registry on my smart phone, there is also a barcode that can be scanned to take the items off the registry. Sorry you had such a hard time with it.

It just didn't work. Shopping for gifts for people is not supposed to be a hassle :-(

I had a bad experience there but it was mostly user error on my part lol.

    Glad it all worked out!

I think you could also just tell the them name and they can apply at register.

Of course, except that they did NOT want to do that. When I asked if they can print the list out somewhere else, they gave me the look as if I asked for cure for cancer.

The thing is just the combination of things not working AND their employees not making any effort to help.

I've heard similar horror stories -- baby items showing up on a wedding registry, duplicate items being bought (because they aren't marked as purchased) days apart, not even just hours, random items being added to your registry that you didn't put there.

I started a registry with Target online, but the website was so clunky and cumbersome that I just said forget it and stuck with Amazon and BB&B.

Not to mention the horror stories I've read about trying to return those duplicate items without a receipt since they were gifts. Ugh.

When the time comes, I'm sticking with Amazon, dammit.

I tried to register there last time i was engaged. They wouldnt let me do it because there was another couple who supposedly had our names and wedding date already in the system. I know it wasnt us because we registered about a week after setting the date, so i just left and took my business elsewhere.

I've heard bad stories too. We did a small registry of home type things we'd like and so far people who have bought things seemed to have a fine time doing so.

I did receive an email from target the other day telling me a few things on my list are no longer available....luckily, they were items that were bought for me and given to me at my shower this past Saturday.

People seem to be sticking to BB&B anyway. I have a large Sur La Table registry and it's barely been touched.

I checked their registry today. ALL the items that they got on Saturday are still marked as not purchased. I guess it's NBD if you get more diapers than you wanted, but I can totally imagine this being a nightmare when in comes to wedding gifts. It's just not supposed to be a hassle, for the guests OR people registering.

I'm sticking with Amazon too :-)

So sorry you had such a hard time. I've dealt with their registry before and never had any issues. Just registered there myself and it seemed to go smoothly. I'll let you know in the coming months of how my experience goes. Just in case, we are also registering at BB&B and Macys. Smiley smile

For the wedding we're probably just going to make a small registry at Kohls (there's one right in our town and it'll be most convenient for our guests), but not advertise it anywhere. It'll pretty much just be for the bridal shower and for any guests who inquire about a registry.

I can see where it may be a little harder to register for baby items, though :/ For example where I live, Target is the only local baby-friendly registry option. There is no Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, etc. Amazon sounds like a great alternative.

You can Google for reviews of the Target registry to see some of the problems folks have. Target is awesome, but if the registry system doesn't work as it's supposed to and customer service and returns are terrible, it's not so awesome.

BB&B worked great -- items were marked purchased in a very timely manner (I assume immediately, but I didn't go check right away), the one duplicate I did get (because I think one set of friends didn't know they had to get a copy of the registry to have the item taken off) was very easy to return and exchange for other items, they constantly have 20% off coupons that make things very affordable... much more positive experience for me and my guests. And for me as a guest to other weddings.

    And Amazon is just love.

    Reenski, right.

This is just my experience as a guest. My friend probably doesn't know there're problems, at least not yet. That's why I said I didn't complain to her, obviously. People usually say "my guests didn't complain". Well, yes, of course they didn't.

This is interesting because I received a couple of gifts from my Target registry at my bridal shower on Saturday. I noticed the gifts were still showing as not purchased on the registry yesterday. It was easy enough for me to just go ahead and check them off as purchased, but I was curious to know why the store hadn't handled it. Sounds like their registry system might need an overhaul along with some training for staff...

And I heard that it's a hassle to return stuff if you do get duplicates, or?

I did a small registry at Target, just for fun. We're not listing it on our website or in the shower invites. If anyone looks and finds it, it's only wine so duplicates are welcome.

Actually it's been official since 2005 (when I registered for my first wedding).

and 2007 (when I registered for my baby shower).

    LOL

Some things do not get better in time.
