Is there a time limit to change your name after you are married?

Lady Firefly, on November 4, 2014 at 12:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I was told that there is no time limit unless its for insurance purposes for work but I do not need to do that. Is there a time frame so you do not have to pay a fee?

Depends on your state. Check there.

Oh good I am researching right now and am in no rush to change it but do not want to pay some outrageous fee later down the road. Thanks!

No time frame for DMV or SS office. But at my job for benefits its 60 days.

There is no time limit. I've heard of people doing it 10+ years down the line.

Also, for benefits you shouldn't have to change your name - just prove you're married (certificate + joint bank account or something). DH is adding me to his insurance, but I'm not changing my name to his. I suppose this could vary by state or something...

Depends where you are. In Ontario you have 90 days after you are married to change your name or there is a fee. It's like $130 so you want to do it on time.

The only timeframe that I'm aware of is that if you change your name within one year of receiving your US Passport, it will be changed free of charge. Other than, I don't know?

Also, in California there doesn't appear to be a name-change expiration date... Heather Dubrow from the Real Housewives of Orange County changed her name something like 10 years after she married Terry.
