Is it rude to have a small cake that doesn't feed everyone?

Should probably explain that. We WILL have cupcakes and/or macarons as well for everyone. But we are considering just a very small cake for the cutting, is that okay or should I definitely plan on getting a cake that serves all guests?

I prefer an actual slice of cake. An alternative to cupcakes is to buy your small "cutting cake" but have a plain sheet cake with your flavors of choice in the back. Sheet cakes are much cheaper than the tiered ones and you won't need bells and whistles because no one will see it. Only your cutting cake needs to be "special" Smiley smile No one will know they got sheet cake vs your cutting cake. Everyone gets cake! Did I mention I love cake?

    Can I ask a follow up/clarifying question?

I was thinking of doing a three-tier cake that feeds around 150, then having cupcakes, pie, cookies, cannoli, etc. on the dessert table. The cake would not be served at each table, it would just be plated and left on the dessert table.

I've been to one wedding that did this and thought it was totally acceptable. Am I wrong?

I just hate it when they have crappy cake for everyone and then some delicious gourmet cake for the bride and groom. Yeah I'll sit here with white cake and white frosting while you have pumpkin chocolate chip cake with ganauche

We are doing cupcakes at our wedding (90 guests so 180 cupcakes). It would of been so much cheaper to do a cake BUT this cupcake place sells gourmet cupcakes that are the best in my area. Way better than any cake I've ever had. We are definitely not cheap for doing it. And we get a 6 inch cake to cut included with our price.

Is there any way you could get a head count from your guests as to their dessert preferences? That way everyone goes home happy. A lot of people aren't big on cake, fwiw--probably due in some part to having been raised on crap-ass grocery store cakes with shortening-based buttercream--but I digress.

I too am over the cupcake thing. It screams Magnolia Bakery circa Sex and the City. It works for a child's birthday party or a casual backyard BBQ. Once you're into the plated dinner/cocktail attire echelon of formality, however, no es bueno.

We had a small cut cake and mini cupcakes and mini pies for our guests. Everyone tried multiple flavors of dessert and loved them. The cupcakes were from the same bakery as our cut cake.

FH and I agree! Bigger cake that feeds everyone would likely equal the cost of doing a tiny cake with tons of other desserts so why not just go for the bigger cake and then we are all eating the same thing. I'm the frugal one in the relationship, so I'm letting FH design his dream cake (literally the only wedding thing he is particular about) and he can cover that portion Smiley smile

That's what I'm doing, I don't see how its rude... rude would be not having anything for guests LOL. Also I'm getting mine at the same bakery so in reality it should be the same cake, just in different form. For me its costs issue, as well as my DIY venue. We wouldn't have anyone to go cut 40 pcs of cake and I didn't want to make any family member do it so cupcakes won over a cake.
