Is it rude to have a small cake that doesn't feed everyone?

Should probably explain that. We WILL have cupcakes and/or macarons as well for everyone. But we are considering just a very small cake for the cutting, is that okay or should I definitely plan on getting a cake that serves all guests?

We're having cupcakes for everyone - delicious vegan cupcakes in four different flavors made by a local natural foods bakery. We're also having a small two tier cake mostly for display, but I think we will cut it because I'm excited about the decorations on it - and anyone who wants a piece is welcome to that as well. There will be plenty of dessert to go around for everyone, so I'm not worried about running out, though I do hope everything gets eaten haha

I would definitely vote for a large cake for everyone. It's fine to do cupcakes, but not the best option IMO.

We are doing a 2 tiered cake for cutting and pictures, and then a sheet cake from Vons in the back.

Actually the point of a wedding cake is to symbolize the groom's breaking of the bride's hymen. So do whatever the fuck you want, because the traditions around cake cutting are really gross and weird. Cupcakes are fine, dude.

I think that people won't care as long as there is something.

I think that as long as there's enough of the type of dessert that the bride a groom cut to serve everyone, it's okay. So if you want to do a small cutting cake and serve all the guests cupcakes, cool. If you want to do a cutting cake and sheet cakes in the back, cool. Everyone gets cake. I do think it's weird if some if the guests get slices from the display cake and some get cupcakes, though. But, if the bride and groom cut cake, and then the guests are served a different type of dessert, that's a tease. If you're going to serve pie to all, cut pie. If you're going to serve cheesecake, cut cheesecake. Make what you cut available to all.

Another vote for hating it. IMO, if you cut a cake, it should be shared by everyone. Why wouldn't it be? It's not like you're saving money on cupcakes. They're just as expensive as cake. Also, IMO, there is a difference between cake and cupcakes, subtle as it is, so if you prefer cupcakes as a couple, then just don't have cake. I think it's very weird to cut a cake that guests don't get to eat.

@Kim what happens if all your guests want cake? If you're going to serve half of them cake and the rest cupcakes, I'd worry that they all (or more than half) ask for cake.

We are doing a 5-tiered monster of a cake, as well as a German chocolate groom's cake in the shape of Yoda's head. I'm serious about cake.

I've seen a lot of weddings have a tiny cake just for cutting along with cupcakes. It's fine as long as you have enough cupcakes for everyone!

Meh. I feel like you should just skip the cake cutting thing if you're not serving cake. How can that tradition be that important to you if the cake itself isn't? I'm also over cupcakes and not a fan of them at weddings anyway. I don't think it's necessarily rude but I personally wouldn't want to do this.

I think it is fine and I disagree with the person who said cupcakes are never as good as cake. I have had some shitty wedding cake before that do not compare to the bomb ass cupcake that I make.

This is reese's peanut butter cupcakes with Reese's in the middle and the bunny cupcakes are yellow cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting

Lemon blueberry with lemon cream cheese frosting, and strawberry shortcake cupcakes. So yes, cupcakes can be just as awesome as cake.

As long as everyone has a cupcake, I think it's fine.

FH'S favorite dessert is whoopie pies, and we live in Maine where they are popular, so we are doing a small whoopie pie cake for us and providing different flavors for our guests to choose from

I'm not a fan of the idea of having people watch you cut something and then they don't get to have any of it lol. But I suppose if there are other desserts it's alright - it's up to you.

I want to do something similar but will have a really small cake on top that is simple for the guests. Of course this isn't very expensive because we are only having 12-15 ppl. Personally I think the cupcakes are awesome, like lilikoi buttercream, salted Carmel drizzle and macadamia nuts.

We are doing a really tiny personal mini cake for each of us that won't be shared. 1) we don't share dessert flavor tastes and 2) I have dietary issues and food intolerance so mine will probably be gluten/dairy free.

I would say if you are doing cupcakes, make sure they are really really good ones. Otherwise I second having a sheet cake to be cut for the guests.

UO- I love cupcakes and would pick those over a slice of cake any day. As long as they are of good quality and there are plenty, I see nothing wrong with it.

My friend did this at her wedding. They had a very simple small cake just for cutting and cupcakes in all different flavors. The cupcakes were awesome- and it was a lot of fun being able to try all different flavors instead of being stuck with one cake flavor (that you may not love). They had different fillings/toppings, etc, so it wasn't like they were just plain and boring.
