Is it ok to send photographer wedding photo ideas?

nimzz, on January 15, 2016 at 5:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

My fiance and I aren't great at taking pictures, so I feel we need practice with poses and test what we like. We also are taking the pics after the ceremony, so we don't have much time to start figuring out what we want on the spot. I was looking at wedding photographs that I like, and was wondering if it would be rude in the photographers' point of view for me to tell them, "We would like this kind of shot/this style"

I am not expecting a replica of the pictures I show them, but just the idea. Of course, I know they would make it their own and we also have to make it our own, as the couple. Photography is expensive in every wedding and we just want to make sure we get the pictures we actually want. Would my photographer feel like I'm invading on their creativity or professionalism if I tell them what I'd like?

I actually asked my photographer if she was okay with it and she said absolutely! I would just ask them before sending a bunch but I don't know why they would take issue, of course they and you will have your own twist on them!

Yes, it's important I think! I put together a pinterest board and sent the link to our photographer. You could also pick pictures from your photographer's own gallery to show them what you like and don't like.

Can you point out ones from their own website to show what you like? That way you know for sure they are capable of doing what you want and won't be offended.

Mine had me make a Pinterest board and add her to it. It's been a good way to share ideas.

I guess it depends on the photographer. When I sat down with mine he said he really doesn't like behind given a list of shots. He didn't mind a suggestion or two but he didn't want a list. I only gave him one suggestion the day of, and I let him do the rest. My pics came out amazing

You could look at photos from their website/portfolio and point out some you like. That would give them an example of what you want and they would have an easier time recreating it because it was their work.

Hi nimzz. As long as you're not asking them to recreate a Pinterest board I don't see it being offensive. You are providing them with your ideas with the understanding that they will make it their own. I would keep the ideas to a few of your favorites.

@Kris: That's very interesting! It's good to know, that way I ask them before just sending the e-mail.

Mine had me add him to my pinterest board as well. He encouraged my ideas & getting to know what we're looking for in our photos.

My photographer specifically asked for this. Their website has you go through and they give you example pics which you say you either like or don't like. Then it tells you which style you liked the most (photojournalism, romantic, funny poses, things like that). Then afterwards they ask you to give them a link to your pintrest and to make a board of wedding photos you love. I thought it worked really well.

@Reggie: WOW, that is AMAZING. I'm envious! But that's great! I wish my photographers had that option, the process sounds so fun and efficient. I'll just have to do it the old-fashioned way, haha.

For my photographer she gave me a list and to edit it for what I want. She then also said to send picture ideas. To me a photographer that does not want a list is a red flag. Not every wedding is the same.

I haven't actually asked my photographer yet, but I've gone ahead and started making a list of shots that we definitely want. Some from her portfolio, and some are just making sure we get a picture of all of my cousins, and at least one picture of us with both of our families in one photo.

It is actually suggested to tell the photographer what your looking for. If you don't you run the risk of missing important moments

Or hire a photographer who has the kind of photos and style you're looking for. Personally I make sure we're a fit, and would find it micro managing to give guidelines or inspirations from others. Nothing wrong with communicating what you want, but looking at their work, that should tell you if they are a match.

Pick a photographer you love and leave them alone. Seriously.

If you hire a photographer who had been doing it for a long time then you won't miss any important shots
