Is it OK to have a wedding on Sept 11, 2010?

Meghan, on July 14, 2009 at 2:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

I am recently engaged and considering Sept 11, 2010 as my date. It is the best timing for me for many reasons--first weekend off-season, less expensive, warm weather, etc. Is this inappropriate though since this is a date of remebrance? thanks!

I think that it has been long enough that you can have you wedding on this day. Maybe you can have a moment of slience for that day at your reception. Now if you were to wait till 2011 that might be an issue as it's ten years. Good Luck!!

My first thought when you said this is that in lieu of favors you could danate to some sort of 9/11 memorial, as so many people are veering away from favors in favor (haha) or somethign practical like this. I think that it's just fine to have it on that day!

Mine is on September 12th and we thought that may be the source of some contention but it really hasnt been an issue at all...

We ARE however hosting a pre-wedding golf tournament on the 11th and proceeds will be send to the Wounded Warriors Foundation so we found that fitting... Smiley smile

The only issue I can think of is that your anniversary will always coincide with that one...I don't think it's wrong in any way, but some people might not want a day of such tragedy associated with their wedding anniversary?

I used to work for a retailer who did bridal registries and was suprised to see how many weddings took place on 9-11-04 b/c I thought that was a little close but I feel as though now it would be okay. The donation idea is a great idea if you want to bring in that aspect to your wedding. Lauren10 did have a good point to consider

I think that it's been long enough to have a wedding on that day..To be honest, we can't stop life to commerate every anniversary, good or bad, we got to keep moving forward, even when this type of stuff happens in life..if we did stop life on these type of anniversaries (not sure if that the right word to use) we wouldn't be able to do anything joyous on very many says..sad, but true..

09/11 has already fallen on a weekend, and I can recall doing an event on that day. For some people it will never be the right time, but life goes on. Go ahead. Maybe take a moment to remember during the ceremony and/or reception.

I'm actually getting a lot of pricing requests for 9/11/09 weddings, even though it is a Friday.

Even better as a memorial to the date, and tie a little something into the ceremony.

You should absolutely have your wedding on 9/11/09. Yes, we remember, but what better way to stamp out the darkness than to supplant it with joy. go on and celebrate.

I think if that's definitely what you want then go for it! I would say though that you should be prepared that if you know people who have relatives, etc that died on September 11th that they may decide not to come because that is a day of mourning for them. Other than that I don't see why not! Good luck!

As long as none of your guests had loved ones die on that day, you should be fine.

Honestly, go ahead and plan it. We have couples come to us all the time for days you don't think people would get married on, we just did one on July 4th. We do Labor Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve. I agree with previous posters that you should be fine as long as you or your guests were not directly involved or lost someone, or if someone did maybe taking a moment of remeberance in the beginning of your ceremony would be appropriate.

Congrats! I see no reason not to, if its what you want and what works. As others have mentioned, just be considerate of your guests if they've lost someone in that tragic event.

    Happy Planning!

Why not, I think that it is important to remember the people that we lost on that awful day. But what better way to celebrate them?

I think its silly to avoid a date. A lot of other things happened on that date--people were born, people were married, people ate dinner. Why shouldn't life per usual continue?
