Is it me or was this venue manager rude?? (kinda long)

CherylR, on August 11, 2010 at 2:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So this weekend I went looking at wedding venues. I went to one in queens, ny but we got there kinda late and most wedding receptions were already started. Well the manager decided he was going to give us a tour anyway and instead of saying we currently have a wedding going on the the room you are interested in he takes us into the room with the wedding going on and tells us "to step in and take a look" that really didnt sit well with me and when I questioned him he told me to make sure i request no one is showed the room when i am using it WTH I felt that was extremely rude and this shouldnt even be an issue. And my FS thinks im over reacting since this is one of the few venues that can hold our amount of guests for a good price.. ugghhh idk what to do a part of me doesnt want to book with them.

Thats what i thought. He even took us in the area where they were serving the buffet dinner. I just dont want to take the risk of strangers in my wedding i would have a complete bridezilla fit LOL

It reminds me kind of like when you're in college and there are high school kids on tours and all you want to do it go to class. I always felt like a zoo animal on display ("Look, kids! A real life PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR!!!!"). I would be pissed.

That happened to us too when we were shopping around (in Queens, NY area as well). But the way few of the banquet managers showed us the room while the event was taking place, I don't think anyone noticed us there..like sometimes from the back, from the side etc. And they were very careful about it too..not like they do'nt care..there was one manager though who took us from one entrance and we existed through another..that I didnt' like at all..like bunch of people walking through their event..from your experience it looks like the guy was very unprofessional..I wouldn't make my decision just based on that..look at the entire experience with him and see how he treated you/was he professional through out the conversation etc. check for reviews/ratings online as well..that might help..good luck with the search!!

Maybe it's a NYC thing. That happened to me as well on many occasions. Although the banquet manager said I can go take a look while the reception was going on, I told him no, it was ok, I can see from here. I didnt want to be rude, especially since I was dressed in jeans and a top. I would hate if someone dressed like I was came into the hall while my reception was taking place.

Ok well if it happens I guess thats the standard but if i use them I will make sure they know NOT to do that to me. This is the first place i looked at in queens, all the other places i saw in other neighborhoods would say we cant take you in so I was really in shock when this guy did it.

Seems unprofessional to me. The owner of my venue suggested I come in on a Friday (or Thursday for Friday wedding) so I could see it set up for a wedding, but I would never expect or want to go during a wedding! I think it is kind of rude to the current bride and groom to have people in street clothes parading through during their special day. I would probably try to find another venue because I would be worried about who would come in on my day.

Yeaaaaa...well at least it wasn't the ceremony!! On the other hand though, that couple may have been told the same thing you were "tell us to not have the room shown" and maybe they weren't opposed to it?

I agree with you Cheryl - I felt kinda weird at my wedding, which was outdoors in an NYC park because people were stopping and taking pictures and stuff...AWKWARD!!! But I have heard horror stories from some venue managers whose prospective brides WANTED to come by during or right before a wedding to see the "set-up". So maybe he has had that happen in the past and was trying to accommodating. Apparently it is common practice in NYC - so I would take it as a regional thing, not necessarily him being unprofessional.

That's pretty crappy of them! And even if you do request that no one be allowed in, who is going to enforce it? Heck, you could have taken a seat and stuck around and they wouldn'thave even noticed!

Now when FH and I went to our venue, there were members of the family setting stuff up for the reception later than night. The staff slipped in and asked if she minded if we pop in for a minutes and take look. That was at 11am. They didn't mind at all- and I actually got the mother of the bride's phone number because their colors were exactly the same as ours and I wanted to buy their table runners...
