Is it me?? Or do a lot of these dresses look the same??

Yardiegirl, on March 14, 2012 at 11:34 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 42

Is it me or do most wedding dresses look the same??

I mean there are small differences but they seem to have...

Strapless, sweetheart neckline, lace or blinged out corset bodice with the quilt looking pickups on the bottom??...and now maybe a sash or a belt?

It's like 85% of the dresses in the boutiques look like that lol

It's getting to look like there's a bride uniform instead of it being that special dress

or maybe it's just the bride look for the millenium...I dunno...Maybe I'm just having dress overload lolol

I agree. Most of the differences noted are only very subtle, otherwise, it's practically the same design!

I agree. I wanted a dress that stood out but they all looked the same to me.

I actually found something I think is different. When I show it to people, some think it's gorgeous...others are looking at it like...that's not what a wedding dress looks like...

I love it! I just didn't want to look like every other bride there is...

I agree that many times wedding dresses look similiar. I think it is the bride that makes the difference. The same dress can look completely different on two different women. I am in high hopes that I have chosen a dress that is a little different.

Totally agreed. And I think I may be the first bride to say this.. BUT, I don't really care all that much about my wedding dress. Style is mermaid, can have lace.. doesn't have to .. can be completely simple.. can or cannot have sweetheart neckline. Is that bad? Not to really care about the dress all that much??

    @Leena, I don't think it's bad...it's just not your thing

Every time a bride posts that they've found their dress on WW, I'm praying it be something really different...but alas...same dress with subtle differences...

I guess we are at the mercy of these designers who want us to wear the uniform...

I don't think we are at the mercy of the designers. Some women are just comfortable with what is on the racks. It could also be a financial thing. The more "out of the box" dresses seem to cost more money. Plus there can always be that family pressure to have a "traditional" dress. My dress is slightly different and no one in my family likes it! You said you found something that you think is differnt. I would love to hear the details of your dress. I love dresses that are "out of the box" and those that are "traditional".

IME there was more variety on the more pricey dresses. For example I really like Jenny Packham's latest collection and none of the dresses look like the ones you posted.

I think dresses that are the average brides budget do tend to be similar. Part of that could be they know what sells and may not have the luxury to provide a wider variety of designs due to less popular styles may not sell enough to make it worth the development/production costs.

I think it depends what bridal stores you visit and the taste/preferences of their respective buyers. I swear at the salons I visited 50% of the dresses were lace...I blame Princess Kate. Also, I agree with Carrie W., once you look at bigger price ranges ($4k up) there is A TON of variety.

Yes, I've noticed that for quite some time. And this look will become just as dated as the puffy-sleeved dresses w/halo veils of the 80s! I always excited when I see a bride who has "gone against the grain" and choosen something totally flattering and totally against what fashion has dictated "should be."

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. I am really going to have problems because I absolutely hate heart-shaped necklines and the "quilt pick-ups" as you have called them. I also refuse to wear strapless, so I think I have my work cut our for me when I do finally go looking. Smiley smile

Nope, it's not you at all. If you want something different you probably need to start looking at couture lines. Allure Couture has some nice ones.

@ Carrie, I completely agree with you...I said the exact same thing.

@ Janelle, there is more variety with a higher price tag. It would be nice if designers would create more variety in style but, without the hefty price tag. I unfortunately am one of those brides who paid a hefty price for a dress that was slightly different. I also didn't want a dress that every one else had.

    Just noticed this blog post:

    http://www.thebridesuite.com/2012/03/inspiration-32-alluring-gowns/

lots of variety, prices are posted as well. Just from a quick browsing most were over $1K but there were still many options below the $4K mark.

I feel the same way about MOB dresses. DB has the same styles as Nordstom and Neiman Marcus, they just look cheaply maide at DB.

The regular Allure and Maggie Sottero are very similar in style. There have only been slight differences. Like Andrene said, if you want something different, I think you need to go couture.

As someone who wanted something that isn't the traditional "wedding" dress I agree with you completely. I tried on at least 50+ dresses and I had such a problem finding something different, especially in stores. I found 15-20 pictures of dresses online that where closer to what I wanted, but no stores carried them.

I'm glad I finally found my dress after putting so many dresses on.

No poof, no all over beading, with a dramatic cut, not dramatic extras.

You do find more variety when you get into the couture lines and higher pricing.

The dress I'm looking at is from Justin Alexander and almost $2k...and it has a....*drum roll* sweetheart neckline and a belt lolol hahaha

I said at least I got away from the strapless and the pickups lolol ...I thought the back was a lot different with the buttons going all the way down through the train

...although, I'm not so sure about being so covered up...then I thought since my wedding is in the Fall, maybe that could be a good thing...

I didn't want to go beyond $2k for a dress and I guess I thought that if I was spending that amount for a dress, I would find more than I did...
