Is anyone else going over budget??

Kathleen, on December 29, 2009 at 10:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 46

I knew my wedding would be a hefty expense when the time came, but never expected to be going over my "budget" by sooooooo much!

Is anyone else in trouble with their FH for spending more than you originally planned?

Hahaha, yes I went waay over budget too! It's crazy how all the "seemingly" small things add up as it gets closer to your Wedding day. Anyway, try not to stress too much. I got married in July and I really miss the planning aspect of it! Just enjoy the process, afterall we only plan on doing it once!

Yeah we have gone slightly over. Nothing has been bought yet but my budgeted list is at $4000 and we wanted it less than $3000 but I'm paying for the wedding and FH is paying for the honeymoon and we are still able to save the money for the $4000.

Honestly... i set the budget myself at $5000, and i havent crunched numbers lately. i dont know what to add into the budget and what not to! because with everything thats happening i definitely think well be a little over. but my mom bought my dress for me, my dad is giving us $2k, and the entire honeymoon is being taken care of by fh's dad and uncle... so i dont even know how to work it all out! lol im thinking about just trying to get everything else i need left as cheap as possible and pretend its all under budget. lol we wont be coming out of this broke.

We never really set a budget. We just set a goal. So far we are OVER that goal by a long shot though. It's to the point that i'm having to give up my dream and settle for what is more realistic.

I too had to give up my dream once I found out how much it would cost. I have managed to cut my bedget in half, by finding other venues I like that were more reasonable.

FH is still not happy with reduced budget. What have you ladies had to give up so far?

My dream venue, chair covers, and layering my tableclothes. But I know I will probably also have to give up the favors I like and the invitations I want also.

My orginal budget was 10,000. Looks like it is going to be closer to 11,000 unless I can find some good deals or find ways to cut.

We never set a budget. I just know what things I MUST have and what things I'm willing to do without. We planned to pay for the wedding ourselves and then my dad sent me $5,000 so I think we'll be fine. I wouldn't even care if we didn't take a honeymoon right away or if we just do something simple if it comes down to it but I really think we'll be fine.

Ok..so how does having a destination wedding answer the question of who's gone over thier budget?? Anyhow, we have defintiely gone over budget, originally our budget was 10k but just our reception alone has totalled to be more than 13k thats not inlcuding my dress, bm dresses, florals, photographer, transportation, coordinator etc. I havent made a tally lately of how much has been spent but last I checked it was at around 15k....ughhh

We started with a budget that we thought was reasonable but we soon found that we were needing to increse it because of the number of people we want to invite. The best way to save money is to invite less guests.

@Bride to Be I think I would have a coronary if our expenses totalled $15k or more! I am far too frugal and overly analytic. I'd be sitting home after the wedding like "WE spent $15k on the wedding. do you know how much furniture I could have bought with $15k? We could have remodeled the bedroom. We could have expanded the garage" lol!

My FH told me over the weekend that I have not only went over the budget, I have more than doubled that so we no longer have a budget. He also said he was expecting me to go over budget so he wasn't that mad.

We are still figuring out the budget. My dad is paying for the main things (reception, photographer, flowers, dress etc), but I plan on paying for the "small" things (hair, makeup, decorations, invitations...). I'm thinking the total costs of the wedding will be $15k or more, plus the honeymoon, but I don't know how much those cost ($4-5K?).

@ladylee...I know right, just the thought makes me really like how the heck did that happen. I know the bulk of it came from our venue and the fact that our meals are $104 a person (over 21) because of the full open bar or what have you. We've been engaged since April of 2008 so we've had about two years to make plans and save up. But with that being said, I think that helped us on the small things because I buy as I go and as things go on sale.My mother has finally agreed to pay for the rehearsal dinner which is small but at this point anything helps. Then we got a family member to loan out his car for us to use as we leave the reception.

I agree with kristenlee the best way to save is have less guests. That's why i am having a "small" wedding so I can have other things I want.

I fought really hard to have a smaller guest count but that was the ONE thing that FH fought me on. Everything else he didn't care. We did compromise a bit b/c initally we had close to 400 people. I told him if it got to be more than 300-350 I wasn't going to show up. I also told him that just b/c I didn't want to have a BIG wedding, didn't mean I didn't want to have a NICE wedding. So he asked me what could I absolutely not live with. I told him if we can afford to have type of wedding that I want to have (which I think we can) but then have to skimp on stuff in order to accomodate 100s of extra people then I'd rather not have a wedding. So he said he would work on cutting down his list. Our venue holds 200 so that's our limit. It's still more than I wanted but far less than we started out with so I'll make it work.

Right now I am at 3,000 over budget and still have 4 months to go and I know for a fact that I am missin something. But FH said that if we can plan and budget for a wedding in 6 months then I should not have a problem budgeting and saving for the down payment on our first home and I have no room to argue...............lol. Especially since he is now more than willing to just go to the JOP.
