Is a wedding planner worth it?

Katie, on December 15, 2019 at 10:32 AM Posted in Planning 0 17
Hi all,

So my fiancé and I are planning a 60 person wedding that'll take place October of 2021. We are going to be having a simple outdoor ceremony followed by a restaurant reception ( well dinner more like). We aren't planning on doing a DJ because we aren't going to have dancing but we will have a photographer and other aspects like that.
We are starting to wonder though if hiring a planner would be worth it. We are trying to make this day the least stressful it can be, but we are realizing, we don't know what we are doing and no one in our families has ever been to a wedding like this so they aren'uvh help.
Has anyone ever hired a planner? Was it worth the price? Did they help like they said they would?
Any advice is always appreciated!!

Hmm we are not hiring a wedding planner - I feel like we have it covered. Now a DAY OF coordinator you will probably want just so you don’t have to stress and know that things will run smoothly and according to plan

Talk to a lot of coordinators before signing a contract. Lay out all your expectations of your working relationship. After hearing your concerns, I think hiring a coordinator will be best for you. They’ll have different price points for you to make your decision based on. You’ll have a lot of relief working with a coordinator.

I personally wouldn’t pay thousands of dollars for a planner for such a simple event, but that doesn’t mean that a planner isn’t for you! I would recommend looking at the checklist here on WW and starting to look at vendors. If you still feel like it’s too overwhelming, you could always price out planners to see if it’s worth it to you.

Is it possible to hire someone for that? Because we won't be having anything at a venue where I know many provide a person like that.

I'm doing the exact same thing. I'm having about 50 ppl and going to a restaurant afterwards. I have someone going there early to decorate and she's only charging $100 for 4 hours. I just asked her if she could tell "gather" my guests after the ceremony and when they get to the restaurant while we're taking pics. Maybe you can ask around...our city has a Facebook page for anything related to our city...maybe yours does too.

Coordinators/planners typically have a day of option. This was really popular when I was a planner and included things like timeline management and vendor confirmation.

Wow, that's a great idea! And yeah we are really looking for someone to just help with the flow of things. Also, we are having the ceremony in a park so we are renting chairs and having someone there to deal with that would be better than us. Thank you! I'll be looking into that

We didn’t hire one and it was ok, but tbh a day of coordinator would have been worth it

I think planners are a personal preference. My FH and I decided not to have a planner because we wanted to do it all on our own. The one thing I will say is you're going to be doing a lot of research for vendors. Where wedding planners have vendors they work with all of the time and can find vendors easily for you that fit in your budget, you will have to find all of that on your own. What I've learned while planning is that everything is trial and error. One caterer you like may be way above your budget when you ask for pricing while another vendor may be right in your budget. It just takes a little longer without a planner to handle everything for you.

If you're on the fence about it, I'd say talk to a bunch of planners, interview them, get their pricing, what their packages are, what they'd do for you and then decide. If you're on a tighter budget or if you just don't want one, maybe skip the planner, but if your budget can afford a planner and you want one, go for it.

I hired a full wedding planner for my wedding next month. That decision was a non-negotiable for me as I am always super busy and didn't want to worry about things falling through the cracks. It is honestly the best money I have spent. We will have been engaged for a year and a half by the time we get married and hired her maybe 2 months into the engagement. My planner has found all of our vendors, kept me on schedule, and made sure we were within our budget. She is also in charge of providing a day of schedule and taking care of all logistics and vendor communications. It has been wonderful to have someone else do the heavy lifting on the planning so all I have to do is make final decisions. If you are as busy with other life things as I am, I would highly recommend a planner. I wouldn't be having a wedding without her.

Wow, really puts it into prospective. We are going to do a lot of stuff on our own and not at a venue, so it makes me nervous because we are younger and have little wedding exposure. You might be right. Thank you so much!
