Interracial Wedding Decor Issue...

NowASeptMrs, on October 29, 2015 at 3:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

My wedding is over but I was wondering if anyone who married interracially had this issue...

DH and I never notice it or point it out but I am Indian and he is white. I was adopted and my whole family has blue eyes and light hair :-)

.

We began to see we were "different" when we started looking at decor because we could not find an interracial cake topper! It was either two dark skinned individuals or two light skinned! We have cake toppers for same sex marriage now but not interracial marriages? I could have ordered one for $30-40 off Etsy but that is all I found... anyone else find one? We just didn't have one. I know we could have done an initial or something but I kind of wanted the bride and groom. Just curious!

(edit: same sex aren't as readily available as I thought)

(edit2: Thanks WW for showing me this isn't just an issue of samesex/interracial. All sorts of issues getting a cake topper to match couple!)

I have seen toppers where you buy the bride and groom separately then put them together as though they're dancing. So, you could get interracial couples or same sex couples. They were in the wedding dept. of a party supply store.

DH has red hair & a beard and I'm much shorter than he is -- so could not find any that looked like us. We had flowers on top of our cake instead.

Etsy is where it's at for cake toppers anyway. Super customizable. I'd go that route just like VM said.

I remember finding a website/catalogue of wedding stuff that had, like Nancy T said, brides and grooms that you buy seperately and are interchangeable. They had different races so you could make the set you wanted.

... for the life of me I can't remember what the name of the company was.

We didn't have a cake topper on our cake, it would have ruined it.

I have seen interracial cake toppers online. I bought ours from Michaels. The bride and groom are sold separately so you can mix and match. They were pretty limited to white and black with a few different hair colors.

I think it may also depend on were you live. I bake a lot and make candy so I frequent a local confectionery supply and they have interracial cake toppers. We also live in Central Florida which is pretty diverse. Now, trying to find a Hispanic angel for my Christmas tree, forget about it!

We had the same issue. I was actually really upset about it for a little bit. Especially since the custom ones are sooo expensive. For us it also felt like the black grooms were all Sooo dark and the "latina" brides all had dark features and super olive skin and the Caucasian ones were blond! We ended up deciding to do a custom elephant one instead since I'm obsessed with them & we're going to Thailand for our honeymoon to see them

Not interracial but we had the hardest time finding one for a black couple with natural hair for the woman and a bald guy. We eventually went with custom made bobbleheads

I remember looking on David's Bridal's website and being annoyed because none of the toppers I liked were interchangeable. I ended up ordering some cute custom ones on Etsy.

I actually found a bunch of places that did interracial cake toppers but that's likely because I did so many hours of searching trying to find a topper that would work for DH and I. Companies seem to think all men are clean shaven and have short hair! My husband has long hair and a beard. Plus I am a ginger. I kept finding every type of couple on the planet except long haired grooms. I even found a guy with a mullet, but...no. I was about to give up when my MOH offered to make our topper and it is SO great!

Can you post a pic of the one you went with @Lawmom? I am looking for a Black couple where the woman has natural hair.

FH and I are both mixed (I'm Latina/white, he's latino/black), so this would have been way more trouble than it's worth lol. We just have our last initial as the cake topper.

Yeah...we skipped a cake topper, partially because of this. Wasn't important enough to go through the headache.

One thing I thought was funny when I was looking for bride/groom ones was that for all the ones I liked (we're both white), there were blonde groom/blonde bride, brunette groom/blonde bride, and brunette groom/brunette bride. That's it. What? Just cause I'm brunette I can't have a blonde man with blue eyes? Those are reserved for blonde girls? lol

I just went for the skeletons, then it didn't matter.

BTW, I know I'm a redhead in my profile pic. I change my hair color like I change my underwear. I'm naturally a brunette and just went black a couple days ago.

We looked into this and it was too much of a hassle. (I'm latina and FH is white). However - to find something with the right skin tones and hair was just a nightmare. So I gave up on that and started looking at other alternatives: initials...custom..a snowflake to go along with our theme..

Anyway.. at a bridal show, I ended up winning a porcelain cake topper (it's in ivory) (and silver cutting set) - so our baker will just use that and most likely put it down on the table with the cupcakes to not take away from the cutting cake (she will decide what looks best the day of the wedding). We decided we would go with it because it was just so much easier than having to keep searching.

It is not surprising to me that it was hard to find an interracial cake topper. Being in an interracial relationship myself, you get used to the fact that you are not "the norm".

Are you really surprised by this? Not trying to be rude, but just find it odd that you are just now noticing that the world doesn't cater to anything outside of "the norm".

At lot of companies just sell separate bride and grooms now so you can mix and match. I've seen a lot of interracial cake toppers as well as same sex cake toppers. Pretty sure David's Bridal carries them. You can even pick things like pantsuits and military uniforms.

I grew up in an extremely diverse town. A lot of people came from multiracial backgrounds. I come from a multiracial background. I am surrounded by interracial couples in every aspect of my life. I live just outside of NYC. So, yes I am surprised that there weren't more cake topper options for interracial couples. It's 2015.

If it makes you feel any better I couldn't easily find any fat bride cake toppers.
