I'm a four eyes. Should I get contacts for my wedding day?

It just dawned on me today that I might not want to wear my glasses! I have worn glasses every day since 4th grade. I have never had contacts, except once about 7 years ago, I did a day trial, which didn't work out (I have astigmatism). They probably have a lot more astigmatism options today. I...

It just dawned on me today that I might not want to wear my glasses! I have worn glasses every day since 4th grade. I have never had contacts, except once about 7 years ago, I did a day trial, which didn't work out (I have astigmatism). They probably have a lot more astigmatism options today.

I asked my fiance what he thought about me getting contacts for the wedding and he said "It would be like marrying a stranger!" Well, maybe he could get used to it if I wore them for a while beforehand. Smiley smile

I feel I do look better without glasses. My lenses are quite thick and they actually appear to distort my eyes a little. Distortion and glare in pictures doesn't sound good. The only pics I have of myself that I like are the ones I took my glasses off for.

Has anyone else gotten, or plan to get, contacts just for your wedding?!

Haven't tried contacts either (though FH has sometimes encouraged me to...or at least opt for smaller frames than I tend to). But my plan so far is to only wear my glasses when reading vows (if I don't memorize them). Ultimately I can do okay with out them, but if I go all day long I can get migraines, so I plan on just slipping a pair in my pockets (I knew those dress pockets would be more useful than originally thought) that I can throw on when it's not a particular photo op/towards the end of the reception.

Carolyn you have had lots of responses but I am going to add my advice to you.

Give contact lenses another shot. 7 years is a long time ago. New lens technology is coming out all the time. Also give the contacts more than a day before you decide they are not for you. They take time to get used to. Your cornea is not used to having a piece of plastic in your eye so when you put contact lenses in for the first time you will be able to feel it and it is not the most comfortable. Listen to the technician's advice about only wearing them for a few hours the first day, then increasing by a few hours each day until you are able to wear them all day long. Again, your eyes are not used to contacts so they will get dried out and tired quicker than normal. I highly recommend daily contact lenses. Yes they are more expensive but they are the healthiest thing for your eyes. Each day you put a new, fresh pair in and toss them at the end of the day. Especially if you are not planning on (CONT...)

Definitely contacts. I don't know how you live without them! I would recommend Systane for eye drops. It works a lot better than Visine.

Wearing them on a regular basis. They may be more affordable then you think! They also make toric dailies for astigmatism.

In regards to your glasses lenses there are also many options of lenses out there. They make high index lenses that are thinner and lighter weight than standard plastic and polycarbonate lenses. I also would recommend a premium anti-glare coating such as Crizal Avance for your issues with smudging and glare. In my experience** anti- glare products that are of the lower end honestly make everything worse. They are impossible to keep clean and do not do a very good job at providing the anti-glare qualities that most people are looking for. I don't know where you live but your best option for finding the Crizal product is going to a private office as opposed to a chain.

**I worked as an Optician for a private optometry office for 4 years

"anti- glare products that are of the lower end honestly make everything worse. They are impossible to keep clean"

YES! I never had this problem before, but my current lenses always have this milky, smudgy film on them, despite cleaning them daily with lens spray and lens cloth. (I got them from Target, so...) the weird thing is that my previous pair from Target did not have this problem. I wore them for 5 years and wiped them on my t-shirts!

I do hope the contact lenses have improved. The contact on my 'regular' eye was great, comfortable, couldn't feel it. The contact on my astigmatism eye was awful... uncomfortable, and it wouldn't shift correctly (or stay in place?)... every time I shifted my eye, vision went blurry. It definitely wasn't something I could "get used to." I went to a highly rated private eye dr., not a lenscrafters or something, and she said we could try some others but she didn't think at the time they would be much different so I gave up.

Honestly, I love my contacts! My glasses umm.. well, they're in my car incase I need them at night if I'm not wearing my contact. I can say it did take some getting use to. I didn't get headaches with contacts like I did with my glasses. The hardest part was putting them in at first.

I have contacts and astigmatism! I love my contacts, I've had them for nearly three years now (I'm 28, have had glasses since 4th grade too) and I NEVER wear my glasses. I was also told when I was in high school that I'd never be able to wear contacts, I went to see a different eye doctor and got them later. Best decision ever.

I never felt very confident in my glasses either, and while FH likes glasses on women, I don't like them on me. He has contacts too. I would try them, I have acuvue brand, but your eye doctor can recommend which ones are best for you. Like I said, I never go a day without them! My vision is much more clear with contacts than it ever was with glasses.

I love love love my contacts and can't imagine how anyone wears their glasses all the time. When I wear my glasses all day, I get sleepy (brain is trained that glasses go on before bed) and I feel like I'm starring in some not so hot porno (I'm a teacher with teacher esque glasses and always flip my hair into a bun when I'm in the middle of a really good lesson).

Back to your question, I would say talk to your doctor and find one of the more breathable brands (I wear Air Optix Night and Day-super ultra breathable because apparently my eye overproduces the oils-strange). If you end up in your glasses, people will see you for who they know and love and if you love your contacts, well ta-da, new husband, new you! Win win either way

I originally got contacts for my big day and ended up not being able to wear them because I couldn't get them in with my nails on. I was so freaking upset!!

Carolyn- Did you ever go back for a re-check for the toric contact lens that was shifting and blurry? I know sometimes a patient may need to have a few visits/ re-checks and trial different prescriptions of astigmatism correction or base curve of the contact lens before the Optometrist/ Ophthalmologist finds the best fitting/ most clear contact for you. Good luck and I hope it works out!

I'd wear what you feel comfortable wearing. When I think about what I'll be wearing, I think about how I'm going to be wearing uncomfortable heels (I hate wearing heels, so they're all uncomfortable to me), uncomfortable underwear, a long dress I'll worry about tripping on ...

I wouldn't necessarily get contact lenses JUST for your wedding. If you want to try lenses again, they do make some for astigmatisms. I have an astigmatism in each eye and I don't think my lenses are FOR astigmatism (AirOptix), but I don't notice any problems. But if it's JUST for your wedding, and then you're going to go back to glasses full-time ...

You want to feel incredible on your wedding day, but if you don't feel like YOU, then there's a problem.

I'd look up some resources for photography of people in glasses, and maybe talk to your photographer if you want more advice.

Yep our photographer actually asked us if we had them she said she would refuse to take them if we wore glasses due to glare with the cost of about $600, I would hate to have glared photos. We both got ours last week. I have an astigmatism in both of my eyes, she said it was borderline and we tried the ones without for a week, I told her I couldn't focus and she placed the glass that fixes astigmatism in front of my eyes and it was like gold!! We plan on keeping contacts for us because it isn't that bad, it still takes me a bit to put them in but I love em. We don't have eye insurance just discounts so we just went to walmart for $80. Acuvue Oasys for Astig. is what I wear.

I say give it a shot before hand. If you feel like a stranger to yourself... maybe don't do it. It's all about what feels right to you since it is your day! I wear glasses while on the computer, driving at night, in class, well a lot actually... but I will not be wearing them on the wedding day, I would just feel weird about it. I can see without them though, they just make everything much, MUCH, sharper..

I am in the same boat as you! I don't want to wear my glasses, but I hate, hate, HATE contacts. I've tried tons of brands, and I usually can't keep them in my eyes for more that four hours (and those four hours are torture!). I have chronic dry eye and, well, contacts just suck. But, if you would feel more comfortable in them, give them a try! The best luck I've had are with Acuvue, and they have a type for astigmatisms! And make sure you keep some re-wetting drops handy!

I'm lucky enough that my prescription isn't TOO bad, so I can probably go without, everything past like 5 feet from me will just be a little blurry lol.
