I'm a four eyes. Should I get contacts for my wedding day?

It just dawned on me today that I might not want to wear my glasses! I have worn glasses every day since 4th grade. I have never had contacts, except once about 7 years ago, I did a day trial, which didn't work out (I have astigmatism). They probably have a lot more astigmatism options today. I...

It just dawned on me today that I might not want to wear my glasses! I have worn glasses every day since 4th grade. I have never had contacts, except once about 7 years ago, I did a day trial, which didn't work out (I have astigmatism). They probably have a lot more astigmatism options today.

I asked my fiance what he thought about me getting contacts for the wedding and he said "It would be like marrying a stranger!" Well, maybe he could get used to it if I wore them for a while beforehand. Smiley smile

I feel I do look better without glasses. My lenses are quite thick and they actually appear to distort my eyes a little. Distortion and glare in pictures doesn't sound good. The only pics I have of myself that I like are the ones I took my glasses off for.

Has anyone else gotten, or plan to get, contacts just for your wedding?!

Carolyn, there are ao many better options now. I also have astigmatism and different, strong prescriptions in either eye ... the contacts they have now do wonders to correct your vision!

I'd say go for it! Your FH will enjoy looking you directly into the eyes. Smiley smile

I am wearing my contacts for most of the night - I have dry eyes so I know at some point I will rock my glasses.

    I am comfortable in either.

But they have a ton more options for contacts now.

Definitely try them out beforehand though. It took me about 6 different types to find one that I felt comfortable in.

GET.CONTACTS! How did you go so long without them? Either way, there's so many choices, now. There's no reason not to have them!

Wow thanks for your all the responses! Yes, glasses are very annoying, but I live with it. They make lenses differently today and I think they're worse... scratch and smudge easier than the old real glass. I have to carry the special spray and cloth with me everywhere. But I'm also really icked out by the idea of touching my eyes.

I did try contacts years ago and one eye was great... the other eye with astigmatism (not-quite-round-eyeball) was uncomfortable and blurry. Of course there are many more options today... I am intrigued by the continuous wear options.

I agree, I think it would be a nice "reveal", haha! And I just love the idea of having my makeup done and actually being able to SEE it!

Thank you for your input, I'm going to call around for an appointment!

SA Bride to Be - I was 24 when I got lasik. There weren't any age restrictions, you just have to have a stable prescription. My prescription hadn't changed in 3 years and I qualified. Not sure what it would have to do with family planning, nothing was ever mentioned to me!

    ETA: Good luck Carolyn!

Also, sometimes I've wondered if contacts WOULD "change my life"...

I'm convinced that I "look mean" because people often seem to think I look angry. They ask "are you ok?" or "you look mad". No, sorry, that's just my face. (Apparently I suffer from BRF: Bitchy Resting Face.) I don't think my thick, dark-rimmed glasses help with that!

I once did an experiment and got a second pair of almost frameless glasses, so they were lighter and you could see my eyes more, and I was convinced that indeed people seemed to respond to me more positively. But I can't wear the wire frames all the time because I am hard on my glasses: I fall asleep in them, etc., so the hard plastic frames are better for me.

Maybe contacts will help with my BRF, lol!

If you want to try them...definitely get them now. Give yourself a little time to get used to them. I wore my glasses for 22 years...never had any interest in contacts...I tried but they were more of a pain then anything. About 2 years ago I gave in...found a good brand and fit for me...and now I wear them every day. I have astigmatism in my left eye...I have special toric lenses (type of lens...not brand)...and it's perfect. It does take some getting used to.

I don't feel like it's worth the expense to buy contacts just for this so I'm just not going to wear my glasses. Things may be slightly blurry that day, but I'll probably be bawling and it will all be blurry anyway!

Caitlin, I wish I could do that. But my vision is just too poor to try to go without. I could end up marrying one of the groomsmen and would be none the wiser!

CRAP!!! I never thought about this. I wear glasses and only take them off when it's bed time. I can't do contacts because I had an accident when I was 8 and my eyelid got slit open. I have trauma about anything coming near my eye because I get flashbacks of the needle they used for the antibiotic.

I do usually take my glasses off when I take pictures though. I guess I'm going to have to memorize what I want to say rather than read it off of my cute scroll.

I have worn glasses since 6th grade & got contacts @ 14, but having my son made them next to impossible to wear, so I've been back on glasses full-time. I'm keeping mine on...i think pics would look weird now without them

I have titanium-framed, practically wireless, glasses with lightweight plastic lenses that automatically darken in the sun. Yes, they were rather expensive -- but they don't give me a headache like the heavier glasses did. I wear the glasses when I'm working at home.

For weddings and other days with meetings out of my office, I wear my contacts. I have astigmatism, but it is not a problem. I've tried a variety of types/brands over the years. Oh, I wear one contact for distance and the other eye has a contact for up close & mid-range (for computer & reading). Currently, I wear the daily disposables -- so the days I wear my glasses I'm actually saving money on the contacts.

Carolyn, if you want to wear contacts on your wedding day, start now. Your eye doc may need to try several brands/types to see what works best for you. You want to be well-adjusted to them by your wedding day so they don't cause watery or itchy eyes.

I've worn glasses since I was about 18 months old. While that problem is corrected, my eyes developed with correction, and now I wear them because my eye muscles are weak and get tired really fast without them. I've had contacts for about 17 years now. I love them, but in the last 3 or 4 years I've developed an astigmatism that Id too slight for contact correction. I tried them and hated the astigmatism contacts. They'd fall out really easily because they're weighted and shaped for an astigmatic eye, so I wear my glasses more often. That said, try them NOW to see if you like them and to get used to them, because it can take awhile for you to find a brand and type you're comfortable in. Ones that don't for well can slip around and irritate or itch, and can burn. Good fitting ones you will forget you're even wearing. I learned that when my doc tried to change my brand and I had those problems. So definitely try them now and let yourself get used to them.

It depends on how bad your vision is. I wear glasses also, but my vision isn't that bad without them. If you can make it without glasses, don't worry about the contacts. If you really need them, then try contacts.

If you are looking for a lighter pair of frames that you can fall asleep in without breaking, they do make those now. I think they are called Flex Steel or something. My fiance wears a pair, and he can twist them nearly in half without doing any damage whatsoever to them! I used to wear glasses for years but now do contacts and love them. Yes, it was hard to get used to touching my eyeballs, but I tried to focus on the fact that I was touching the contact lens and not my eye, and for some reason, that helped me. I wear the Acuvue Oasis for Astigmatism and they are great!. I would recommend you get set up with a real eye doctor's office as opposed to a mall doctor like pearl vision, lenscrafters, walmart, cosco etc. The chains and mall docs seem to really focus on volume / in and out, get an order out of you. I went to a traditional doctor's office and discovered that none of the cheap quickie places were even including the astigmatism in my prescription!

I have astigmatisms in both eyes and wear contacts most of the time. I wear glasses 2-3 times a week. I have Acuvu (sp?) Oasis contacts for astigmatisms and they work great!

I'm so torn about this subject, as I just got glasses this year. None of my family has seen me with them besides in a couple of photos on my Facebook and will only see me for two trips home before the wedding. I'm not able to wear contacts due to irritation on my eyes (due to sleeping with them partially open) so I don't have that option. I can see without them and I don't wear them when I'm home, I only wear them while driving or at work to see far away. So I might just not wear them or wear them after on into the reception.

I would try some contacts for now so you can make a decision about wearing them for the wedding. I have astigmatism in both eyes and have worn contacts for 18 years. You just need a good optometrist who will find the right contacts to fit your eyes.

Also, remember to experiment with eye drops and solutions. A few years ago, my contacts were becoming unbearable to wear. I tried 3 different kinds and they all hurt my eyes (or so I thought). Then on my 4th appointment in 6 weeks, an intern suggested trying different solutions. Turns out I had developed an allergy to the preservatives in some products! I just changed the kind of eye drops I was using and now I'm back to normal - being able to comfortably wear my contacts for 12-16 hours.
