If you're considering a second hand dress....

Please know that you are totally gambling with the cost of alterations.

As an avid thrifter, I bought my dress from a bridal consignment shop. I got a wonderful deal on it and it was exactly what I was looking for.

I took it in for alterations yesterday and she will have to fix the previous alterations before she even begins mine. It will cost me more than I payed for the dress itself.

I love my dress, but had I known that buying second hand would lead me to spend much more than I would have on the new second choice dress I loved, I may have made a different decision.

Just a word of warning to everyone who prides themselves on a deal like I do.

And here's a picture of my now very expensive dress! LOL

This is a great point (and beautiful dress!) . I’ll also add that : shopping around for a seamstress is important- get a couple quotes if you can, you may find quite a bit of variation in cost. AND certain alterations are negotiable . I paid for a “fix” in my dress that I didn’t really care about , but I nodded along and didn’t ask to simply leave it as I was scared to speak up and due to some other factors already in a scramble and just wanted to leave it and get it done. I didn’t think what she ultimately did made a big difference for the initial “problem” and I have never cared about the “problem” much anyhow. I could’ve saved a couple hundred bucks if I had just asked to hold off on that part of the alterations :/

I bought 2nd hand as well and alterations costed double what I paid for the dress. Also, because previous alterations had to be corrected as well as the alterations I needed.
