If you want liquor... Surprise!

Daniela, on March 14, 2016 at 7:19 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 40

So this is more a rant than anything else but I just found out that in Texas (not sure anywhere else) if your venue is considered a "private" venue, and you are planning to serve liquor (anything other than beer and wine) you HAVE TO have a security guard or police officer present to guard the liquor.... Has anyone ever heard of this? I verified with one of my police officer friends (and he verified with his chief) and it's true. It's definitely a law.. But here's the best part (not)... The suburb that our venue is in, has its own police department and my ex works for it.... My very bitter ex and all his cop friends... Lol fun.... Just wanted to vent because I want to pull my hair out lol

ETA: I had no idea my ex had transferred to that PD... I haven't talked to him in years. I found out today and our venue is booked lol

It's the same here (Va) if the guest list is over a certain number. At my venue, it's 100 and they reserve the right to require more at their discretion.

I doubt they will let him do the wedding! As for his friends, good luck with that. Bitterness runs deep among packs.

Would you really re-book your venue to avoid having one of your ex's coworkers there? If it's that big of a deal, I would look into private security or see who the alcohol provider or bartending service recommends. I had to have officers at my wedding too

Oh jeez I'm sorry. We have to have security too, but that's a venue rule not a law I think. Maybe have your FH's mom or someone else with a different last name contact and book the security, to avoid the hassle of them knowing it's you. Ugh I'm sorry!

@FutureMilitaryWife agreed! I will make sure he's definitely not the one assigned lol but his friends are definitely almost just as bad...

@KM I don't think we want to re-book, it's just a shitty situation you know? I was hoping to never have to deal with his bs ever again and here we are lol I'm thinking of private security, it's just an extra cost I wish I could avoid...

@LizzyS yeah it's so crappy! here in Texas it's apparently a law, and it can't be a police officer from an outside PD either :/ agreed! I asked my best friend to make the call and that's how we found out lol I just REALLY don't want him or any of his friends there... But I don't want a fine either haha

That. sounds. horrible. I agree with PP -- look into private security. If it's a law, then there has to be some company that has made a business out of it rather than taking up the staff of the police department every Saturday night.

Yeah I'm in Texas and noticed that when I went online to look at each venues policies. And it also depends on the number of people you have at your wedding. I saw some that said like If you have more than 100 people then you have to hire 2 officers and so on. That sucks with the ex issue. Maybe you can request a certain officer or officers to be at your wedding?

Hopefully they can act like adults for one night and not cause a scene or any problems at your wedding. Good luck!

We have to do this if there's any alcohol at all, I thought this was a normal thing!

NC here and the same law. Our reception will only be beer and wine because of this.

Our venue requires this, not the state. We have to have one officer for every 50 people.

So sorry about your ex's department! That sucks!

I have to at the venue I'm currently looking at for any type of alcohol served. I'm in Tn. But not all of the venues I've been to are like that. I think it's weird also

I'm in Austin and I am required to have 1 security guard at my venue because we are serving liquor. My contact at the hotel made it sound like it was for my benefit to keep people from getting rowdy but she never mentioned it was a Texas Law.

    Where in Tx are you?

Man that sucks about the ex. My venue used to require a security officer if any alcohol was being served. Now they just require an ins policy of so much to be obtained before.

We live in Ohio and I'm not sure if it's a law but we are having a police officer at our wedding per the venue rules. They make it mandatory anytime there is alcohol being served... I don't mind it
