If you got Ivory shirts from Men's Wearhouse...

Eri, on September 27, 2020 at 9:41 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Can I see your pictures?

I'm suddenly concerned that we picked the wrong color and should've gone with white.

My dress is a light ivory over light gold/champagne with antique silvery beading/crystals. I feel like no shirt is going to match exactly, but I'm worried the guys are going to look off.

(And yes, I'm already planning on calling MW today to see what my options are, if I can make changes, maybe take shirt samples to the bridal shop to compare, etc.)

Thank you!

This is the same photo I posted the other day in response to a similar question. Daughter's dress was a Rebecca Ingram ivory over gold dress and SIL wore a white dress shirt with a dark gray suit. This picture from their cake cutting (later in the night, after SIL removed his jacket) shows the two colors together most clearly. I think they looked great.

My wedding is over a year away so I haven't gotten to this part yet and have no pics to share, but I am curious... are they wearing a tux or suit? I've been worried about it ever since I saw another post about white or ivory shirts with white or ivory dresses because I had not thought about it before. I don't have a dress yet but most of the ones I like are ivory but I want our guys to be in a classic black and white tux. I don't even know if ivory shirts look good with tuxes?! I hope more people share pics!

Here's a photo when SIL had his dark gray jacket on over his pure white shirt (from Macy's). Again, D's dress was ivory over pale gold. This photo was taken about 4 pm, an hour before sunset.

Thank you so much! Both of your photos are super helpful. Smiley heart

My mom and I went to Men's Wearhouse this afternoon and switched all the shirts and pocket squares to white - the MW ivory is just too yellow for my dress.

FH is wearing a dark grey tux (was supposed to be charcoal, idk what happened there lol, but we're just rolling with it at this point), groomsmen are in light grey suits.

We went to Men's Wearhouse this afternoon and switched the shirts and pocket squares to white for everyone.

Looking at everything again, the MW ivory was just too yellow. Now if it was a different shade of ivory that looked more off-white or soft, it would've been okay. At least to us, their white shirt didn't look too stark or anything, and we think it'll go better with my dress.

I think white shirts are more of a safe bet, unless you're dealing with a place that has more than 2 shades to choose from! Smiley smile

I think you'll be happy with that change. Ivory dresses look pretty much white, just a bit softer. I think some "true white" wedding dresses tend to get a blue-tint in certain light, where ivory (even with a pale gold lining) just looks like a "warmer" white. Daughter's ceremony, cocktail hour, and most pictures were taken outside during the daylight, and the reception, under a solid cover with artificial lighting, took place after sunset till about 10:30. They got back 1100+ edited professional photos and there isn't a single one where his white shirt clashes with her ivory/gold dress. Good luck! Smiley heart

This photo is FOB (wearing the same white shirt as SIL), but with a black suit, next to D. (Taken about 30 minutes before sunset.)

Ooo this looks beautiful! I think my dad will be in something similar. I feel so much more at ease now that we've switched to white!

(This is my dress for reference -- in person and in our iPhone photos it definitely looks like the first and third photos color-wise: https://www.bridalsbyelena.com/product/mon-cheri-martin-thornburg-minuet-118260/)

Your dress is stunning, and I agree it will look wonderful with the men wearing white shirts. Congrats! Smiley heart

PS -- my daughter is also a redhead (as if you couldn't tell from her skin in the photos! Smiley winking ) and ivory over gold was so flattering to her hair & skin! Smiley heart

The idea that grooms and groomsmen shouldn't wear white shirts if the bride wears an ivory gown is some weird wedding industry/rental idea that nobody who knows about menswear supports. A white shirt is always a good choice with a tuxedo.

    Cheers,

    Griz

Hah, as I did more reading and research, I came across your sentiment more and more! I don't know much about menswear and just trusted the consultant, but realized that was a mistake.

I'm so thankful we were able to switch to white!

It's amazing how many people in that profession are clueless. If you have any other issues/questions, ask me (or someone like me) instead of them. Smiley smile
