I won a bridal show giveaway... is it a scam?

Trena, on January 12, 2012 at 12:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

I just got a call saying my fi and I won either a mini-moon to a variety of locales, or free wedding bands. The only hitch is to go to a cooking demo. I made absolutely sure that there is no financial obligation, and she assured me there is not. Fi is really good at turning down salespeople, so I'm not worried about that, and the lady also said that there is no timeshare thing or hiccup like that. We figured it doesn't hurt to at least check it out. It seems legit, especially since it is endorsed by the Bridal Show people. And if they ask us for any private info or to pay, we'll just leave. But a mini-moon is worth it IMO!

Has anyone else won something like this? What were their experiences?

    It's a scam.

We got the same phone call - and they kept calling until we accepted to go (but never showed up and didn't give them our real information).

They can "assure you" as much as they want but you still have to purchase there stuff to get the honeymoon. The one that called us was pampered chef.

It's like those Mary Kay people that call you and say you have a free gifts waiting if you sign up for a free make-up trial (where they come to your home and try to sell you stuff). Then they want you to have a party and you get the free gifts only if your party hits a certain amount of sales.

Yeah, all garbage and a waste of time to me.

Can you look up reviews for the company online or check with BBB?

I've had friends win major stuff at bridal shows, like a dress or an AI honeymoon stay, and I don't either any of them had to attend any sales demos. The companies just congratulated them and gave them vouchers. So I would check it out just to make sure it's not a gimongous waste of your time.

The same thing happened to me and they kept calling until I told them that we had already gotten married so they would stop calling.

The "free" wedding bands are always free, you don't have to go to the cooking demo. They are tungsten bands that they charge $25 shipping & handling per ring. If you are interested, I'll dig up the link. A lot of ladies have bought them for their men, and seemed petty happy.

Jvljewelry.com and enter the code "brides"

I believe thats what you are referring to Jennifer. We each got one (i wear mine when I dont want to wear my ering and band, like camping or theme parks) but he got a black one which I advise against. They scratch easy and the silver underneath shows through

In addition to paying a fee to have a booth at a bridal show, each vendor is asked/required to provide a gift with no strings attached.

The last show I did I provided a free Rock the Dress Session and a fee Engagement Session...no strings, no gimmick, and they're the same sessions I provide my paying clients, so they don't get anything "less". If the vendor providing your giveaway tries to pull some snarky stuff, I'd get in touch with the bridal show coordinators. I doubt they would, but there are a few bad guys out there that make the rest of us look bad too.

We had the same thing offered to us, we went to the show and liked what they was selling but is was very exspensive. But you have to read the fine print on the vacation, you have to pay $50 deposit with a major credit card. And travel exspenses, like the other brides were saying the bands are always free. I plan to get FH from jvljewerly.

Thanks ladies! I missed the other thread apparently, whoops. And good to know about the rings! Smiley smile

@Stephanie, I don't think every vendor was supposed to at ours (Portland, Oregon), because not that many did. I'll just not go, but still try out the free ring code! Smiley smile

We got the same thing for a free 3 day vacation. Just had to show up and listen to this guy talk about pots and pans for an hour or so. He was funny and the pans were nice, just can't afford pans for thousands of dollars even if they do last a lifetime. We got a voucher for the vacation, you get to choose your location and date. But they pick the hotel. You do need to place a $50 deposit. I'm not trusting it fully, but I will try to use it to add extra days to our vacation in costa rica.

    Hi Stephanie,

I know you posted this a long time ago, but I've been googling because I got the same phone call saying I won at the bridal expo and it was people that were selling the pots and pans. I was wondering if you could share how this worked out for you? did you end up using the voucher? was it worth the $50 deposit, is there anything scam like or fishy about this? Thank you so much in advance for your help!

This is Cheryl with the Bridal Registry. I am contacting you regarding the bridal show at the Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, CA on 7/17/22. Not sure if you made it to the show, but if you did, you may remember we were the cookware booth that was handing out the polka dotted bags with the little spatulas! Even though you may not have been able to attend, you and your fiance have been one of those chosen to receive the gift package (honeymoon accommodations, a $600 gift card for 2 wedding bands, a $200 gift card for a 14x22 Acrylic Photo enlargement of your favorite wedding/engagement photo, and more). YAY!! We are back in the area! Yay!! Please contact me at your earliest convenience so that I can go over the details and make arrangements for you and your fiance to receive your gifts this week. You can text me back at this number. Or feel free to call our office# 631 923 1312 ext 7569. Thank you! -Cheryl

I think there are too many "winners." It is better to avoid these "prizes." One thread had someone reporting the pans they got were not very good.
