I wish people would stop asking "well, are you sure?" after everything I say wedding related!!

Deanna, on May 5, 2015 at 1:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

UGH this question has me stressed out about the wedding more than the wedding day itself! Whenever I tell family members some detail about the wedding, they are always like, "well are you sure you want that?" NO, I'm saying it because I totally want something different!! And then after they say it, I'm like, well maybe I should change it, so I second guess myself. Anyone out there having this same issue? Ok mini rant done. Smiley smile

Yep. All the time. Now that I have reached the IDGAF stage I am WAY better at saying this is what I want. End of story.

Are they saying it to normal things like, "I want chocolate cake," or are they saying it because you're like, "I want a dress made out of pumpkins"?

Edited because a chocolate CAKE is the normal thing I meant to say, not a chocolate CAR

Nope, but I that would drive me crazy! I'm the queen of second guessing little decisions, but luckily all my family's been super supportive

Don't second guess yourself, especially when you love emerging! It's your special day. Don't let anyone steal your joy! Just let it roll off your back and smile and nod...LOL!! Do what you love and what you're happy with!! =)

Yep. Conversation I had with my Mom after I first got engaged:

"Are you going to take his last name?"

    "Yes"

"Oh. Well, you have a year to think about it."

..with my FH sitting. right. there.

Yep I get that from my mom all the time. Especially about the flowers and wedding colors I want. I don't want a lot of flowers I just want baby's breath on the tables. It sounds plain but it's going to look really romantic and rustic. I will have actual flowers in my bouquet though.

My step mom is the worst. When I had her write out the invitations (she said she knew how to do calligraphy, but it ended up just being written in cursive with a calligraphy pen) I wanted to print our address on those cute wedding sticker labels and put it on the back of the flap and I wanted the invitees address in the middle on the front. She ended up talking me out of it, "it was tacky to have a sticker when the address was handwritten" and so then I just wanted our names on the back, but she insisted it needed our return address, just in case it got lost in the mail.

I get a lot of "is that right?" from FH's family, drives me crazy. No "that's great" or "that's awful", or even "OK, whatever", just "is that right?"

Yes I ran into this a lot while wedding planning. It was really irritating. Pretty much everything I did wedding related was questioned by someone. The only one that didn't do it was FH. Also I had a ton of people ask me questions that really didn't affect them at all. Like questions about my DIY projects (I began responding with "I have a plan" because it got so irritating to spell out every detail), and even on our wedding day I got peppered with "what are you doing tomorrow?" down to a step by step outline of my entire day.

I haven't gotten too much of that, the worst is when I know people have been talking about the wedding when I'm not there. It's not malicious, but I'll go over to FIL's and they start a discussion about something that FH and I already discussed. Clearly he went and talked to them about it, how dumb do you think I am...luckily I love them all to pieces.

Haha, yes! My FH and I have decided to skip the DJ and just have his brother take on those duties, and I've definitely gotten a few "are you sure?" comments. I'm like "Um, unless you want to pony up the cash for a DJ, then yes, I'm sure."

I also remember this drove me crazy when I was a journalism student in college. People constantly told me, "Well, you can always change your major." Um, thanks.

But, for real, my FMIL does that ALL the time!! Of course, hers is always followed by what SHE would do. Because obviously it's her wedding so only her opinions matter.

Sorry, that got a bit more antagonistic than I had intended

I am really close with my FIL's. My FSIL is my best friend/MOH. In the beginning when I would ask their opinions, especially on BM's dresses, it was always It's your wedding, I'll wear, carry whatever you want. I send pics of anything and it's "Beautiful". Drives me crazy. I"M ASKING FOR OPINIONS!! yes I'm yelling..nobody has one on anything? My FMIL is the opposite. Everything I do is great.....and then she adds, but I would do this...! UGH

Omg yes :\ or they proceed to tell me everything that I *don't have* to be doing for the wedding. I fully understand that we don't have to do anything...we could just go to the courthouse and get it over with, but that is not what we want. If we so choose to have monkeys swinging from the ceiling that is our choice for our day. lol we haven't asked anyone for any help...all we ask is that they come on our day and enjoy it with us.

@Rachel I feel the same way. Not that I'm a control freak by any means, but I like things done a certain way so FH and I have pretty much done everything for the wedding. We love to DIY stuff so we don't mind. The only thing I delegated was the favors to one of my bridesmaids. Even those I did the favor tags for and sent them to her(she lives in West Virginia) and the addresses, which did not turn out the way I had hoped they would. *see above in comments* so this is why I took on a lot of stuff for the wedding.

I haven't gotten a whole lot of that, but I can see that it would be extremely annoying.

I'm a world-class procrastinator, so I've gotten really tired of hearing "what about x?" "have you done y yet?" "you'd better get on z! EVERYONE has that taken care of by this point."

@Jess yes I am the same way. I didn't even start to plan until about January of this year. We just bought a house in October so we were still settling in and then it was a busy holiday season at work so I had no time to even do anything. I only have a few last minute details to do, which can't be done until the final week anyways, like printing the seating chart and getting it hung on the foam board.
