I got fired Tuesday...

Mandy, on May 7, 2010 at 12:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 31

...& I'm so stressed out. The wedding is almost 6 months away & I still need so much money! The last time I lost my job, my FH & I struggled very badly until I was able to find another job, but we weren't engaged then, & so we didn't have to worry about that money. Not only that, but just a month ago I got a loan for a car. I mean, we now have a roomate that pays us $300 a month, but that should only cover the bills...what about the wedding?!

That's awful!! Definitely start looking like today... like bride2b said--fill out applications EVERYWHERE- (even places you would hate working)....sometimes when you are desperate you have to do things you just don't want to do. Good luck!

I'd try starbucks, target, the mall... places like that wouldn't be as bad as fastfood (in my opinion)

I don't know if this would be up your alley, but I'm an independent distributor for a jewelry company... direct sales, homeshows, etc... and you can make as much as you are willing to work. Let me know if you're interested

I'm feeling you there! Ive been applying everywhere under the sun! Just keep calling no matter what. In this economy you have to call them because they wont call you. I had to call walmart physically and ask to talk to someone and they said my hours didnt fit their hours so I went online and changed my hours to fit their schedule better - but i have to call them again because they still havent called me

@ Brian C, I know it would probably help, but I've already got the building booked & the invitations made, that's a lot of money gone down the drain if I move the wedding...they won't give me back my money. I would consider moving it to next Hallween if it weren't for all the money I've put in that I can't get back. Thanks for the suggestion though!

@ Krystal G, I've learned that calling is not the best thing to do...I know it seems like the best thing, but it really annoys the employer when people keep calling about their applications. My suggestion to you would be not to put specific hours of availability on your applications. Employers like it when your not picky & you have a better chance of getting called. Also, handwritting is a big issue...if you don't have good handwritting, get someone else to fill the application out for you or fill one out online.

@ Brian C, unfortunately both of our families are like us...living paycheck to paycheck. & my story is really long & complicated, basically the owner was out to get me & jumped at the first chance to fire me. It was totally stupid, he fired me for being sick & doing what I was told. Good thing I've got my side of the story & the videos from the store with audio as well Smiley winking to back my story up, because his letter of seperation is a bunch of bull. Hopefully I'll get approved for unemployment, but who knows how long that will take...

I only put specific hours when they ask, plus I have to ride the city bus to places because we only have one car atm (we're in the process of looking for one under 2k)

I have to disagree about the calling thing. I posted an ad on craigslist for a bookkeeping position and within 3 hours there were 100 applications! The way I began weeding them out was picky but how else do you deal? I deleted anyone who didn't follow the directions I posted. If an applicant called me, I looked for their specific email and read it when it may have otherwise been looked over or deleted. Also, as an employee I have always called after submitting a resume and no one has ever lectured me or not given me a job because of it. Calling shows motivation and persistence which are good qualities. I say submit your resume in person if possible or online, wait about 3 business days, call to followup and just say "Hi this is XXX, Just want to make sure you've received my resume. I submitted it on XXX day. I would like to schedule an interview with you."

The 2010 Cenus is hiring all over the country. They are pretty decent wages, at least thats what FSIL says.

Thank you all! & about the calling, I wasn't talking about major places, I just meant like gas stations, food places, & such. I've been told that by the employers themselves. If people call, they get irritated & throw their applications away, same as if they come up there a lot. Not all jobs are like that, but a lot are.

@ MrsJoseph, I didn't think about that, but I just called my local office & they are no longer hiring. I wish I had known about it sooner. Thank you so much for the information though!

Amanda, while you are filling out apps and looking for a job with a steady pay, post an add on craigslist for photography? You are very creative, you love taking photos I have not seen your stuff but maybe senior photos, engagment shoots, local weddings, maybe even a local newspaper or magazine, they are sometimes always looking for freelance photographers. I don't know what you were doing before but you can check out www.elance.com which is a freelance web-site for all sorts of work incuding writting, photography and graphic design.

Amanda Just keep in there you will find something way better then what you had before you just have to keep at it. I was fired over a year ago and I worked for the company for four years never had a problem until my Department Manager saw a problem when she took over two months later I was gone. I was so worried because I had rent car and all kinds of credit card payments and I couldn't get unemployment. I went home filled out as many online applications for stores in my area and the next week I got a Job that is ten times better then what I had. The biggest thing is to be open to any job as long as your getting paid it's better then nothing and you will find a job quickly.
