I Don't Want a Boring Wedding

Mrs. Grissett-Johnson, on January 15, 2013 at 10:29 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

It's been 2 weeks since my FH proposed and I've been in planning mode ever since. I've gotten as far as the budget, guest list and location and I'm already exhausted. We've flirted with the idea of running away and eloping in Hawaii, but then I started to think about how this would be the first wedding for both our families and how it would feel to deprive our parents of that experience.

I won't lie, money is tight but I've always been a "less is more" type of girl anyway. So while eloping is tempting the alternative would be for us to have a very simple and elegant beach wedding; maybe a party of 30 (or less). Because of that I'm pretty sure there won't be a DJ, open bar or anything else super exciting. What can I do to keep my simple and elegant wedding from becoming a snooze fest?

I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but we are putting a cute little deck of cards in a fancy bag on each table, with a printed note attached that says, "Don't Feel Like Dancing? Grab a Buddy and Play a Game!". That way those who don't want to dance can still have fun!

Also we are using Spotify in lue of a DJ. It lets you create playlists from unlimited amount of music and download it to your computer so you can play it offline for $9.99 a month (with a month free, which we are using for our wedding month).

We are on an extremely tight budget, but I still plan to have a super fun wedding, and I know you will too! Don't worry, it will be great!

I think you should just keep it short. People go to parties that don't feature "entertainment" all the time. Folks can mingle with one another, chat, or just enjoy being on the beach. Maybe you could bring a cooler so everyone can have some champagne.

Maybe if its in your budget, rent a beach house for the night. Plug in your Ipod or Pandora. The people make the party!

Just in case. If you still consider eloping, Hawaii is super expensive. There are other places that are more budget friendly. I felt same way, dont want my parents and close family to miss our day but found the big wedding to not be my thing. But I mentioned to them and everyone is all for it. Letting everyone know ahead of time gives everyone time to save as we are a year out.

My mom has always said I am allowed to elope only if she comes too. I tried to explain that isn't really eloping. I went to one wedding where there were bits of trivia about the bride and groom all over throughout the ceremony and the reception.

30 or less sounds like a great mix and mingle group. Make sure you have great food and people won't forget your wedding.

Maybe you can provide games. Something that will get everyone involved. Sit people w/those who will conversate w/one another. If you have a iPod or a computer you can still have music. I don't think your wedding will be boring @ all.

Eloping + Mom Coming = Destination Wedding

Could still have 30 people partying on the beach!

Thank you ladies for the feedback! Since it will be such a small wedding party I definately don't want to skimp on the food. I'm thinking great food, awesome waterside scenary and something from the iPod will work great. I even love the card game suggestion being that I have a few Spades champions in my family, Lol.

We didn't have a lot of money but made it personal.

we were lucky that we have many musician friends. We had a live band all night though it was actually many different bands. Our friends didn't bring gifts and we didn't pay for music and everyone danced all night.

Btw. a lot of resorts give the bride and groom deals based on how many people come. You might want to invite 80 people to a DW and when 30 come you and FH get a free trip and only have to pay for the catered dinner the night of, all booze will be free cause your guests are paying all inclusive rates. No one has to be left out, etc.

Food, drinks, and music. Like someone else said, people go to parties all the time and have fun without flowers everywhere, DJs, or open bars all the time.

I like the game idea- we're getting cards and dice for our reception-you can get a large amount of cards for cheap at stores like bjs or sams

Although we provide services for corporate & social affairs, our comment is not to be bias.

We consult brides all the time... The most special part of your wedding day is when you two say "I DO!" You should do everything to make that moment special. Everything else is basically the biggest (most $$&dollarSmiley winking party for family & friends you have ever thrown!?!

Real talk? Top event & wedding planners surveyed their clients, "What their guests remembered most about their wedding?" Think of the last wedding you attended?

Guests did not remember.... The flowers? Your hair? Your shoes? Your dress? Even that you wore white?

    10% remembered the food

15% remembered the venue if it was unique or well decorated and/or had event lighting

Over 20% remembered Bar Service... Open Bar. Guests love free drinks!

Hands down nearly 50% remembered the entertainment or lack of?

No DJ... Elope & throw an after party at a club when you get back.

Note, nothing says hire us. Keep it simple & best of luck!!
