How to tell if a diamond is real or fake? *update*

I had to send my ring back to Kay's because the diamond became loose when I knocked it on a counter and I got it back a week later (over the weekend). Well, when I got it back and ever since I got it back, I swear it's not the same diamond!!! The diamond I was proposed with was soooo clear! On the certificate of the diamond it's classified as colorless. And now, it just looks weird! It doesn't shine the way it used to in the light. I want to take it back to check the serial number and take it to a jewelers to check if it's real. I hated that Kay's had to send it out to get serviced and now I'm paranoid that it was switched. I swear it's not the same diamond!! To ease my mind til I can take it in, does anyone know how to tell if a diamond is real? Without the microscope.

ETA: just got out of a jeweler. He showed me my ring under the microscope and my serial numbers are the same!! Thanks God! He explained that the reason for the lighting difference is because they cleaned it to look brand new. He also explained the at home ways to check a diamond like the whole fog thing, the rainbow color stuff(he said not to trust those methods because they'll make you paranoid!!). Mine was picking up other colors that it didn't before (which was a reason I thought it was different) and he said that when it's cleaned like brand new it'll shine differently than when it has been handled. My band did come back with damage to it (which didn't help with me thinking it was different). He showed me how the damage was done. The pliers used to hold the ring to tighten the diamond damaged my band. So I do have to take it in to get that fixed, but I'll pass. I can live with that damage. He told me that it does happen, when rings will get switched, so he told me I can come anytime I need adjustments and he'll help me out for free. Everything they do is in store! Thanks everyone for the support, I was going crazy.

We support you. You don't need luck if you have all the facts (and in this case the paperwork!)..

Keep logical.. (not even gonna go for calm!) and be rational!

Ditto not going to Kays without going to another jewler. You need written documentation AND i would NOT go to the local store. You need to get in touch with a corporate manager and maybe an attorney. Also at the very least, if its a different stone, they need to pay for the new appraisal and give you something for your time.

If your ring is GIA certified it should have that number laser etched in the diamond. My jeweler showed me where mine was. Definitely get your paperwork & stop at another jewelry store first. Take a deep breath which I know is so hard & keep us posted. Good luck!!!

FH said he saw the serial number in the ring when he bought it. I'm going home after work (finally in 20 mins) to pick up my paperwork then going to a different jeweler to see what they say. Depending on what they say, I'll go from there. I've calmed down a bit. By reading others posts on here actually. I'm trying to calm down because I know whoever I end up seeing at Kay's is most likely not who fucked up my ring. So it wouldn't be fair to raise hell with them. But it's so hard to stay calm.

I just texted by FH just to tell him and he actually said that is very common unfortunately. So TRY and stay calm...whoever did screw up WILL have to fix it. At least you caught it now and not ON your wedding day Smiley winking

One of my co-workers ordered a jewelry kit from Amazon. It came with a diamond tester. Well, when it was delivered by nosey butt; took it home & tested every piece of diamond jewelry I had. I gave it back to him, feeling real good about myself. Anywho, any local jeweler can test it for you.

Not all GIA certified diamonds have numbers etched in them. The only way to tell if it's the same diamond (with no etching) is by the inclusions, unless it's completely flawless.

I have a Leo from Kay's and the serial number is etched in the stone. when we have it serviced they always show me the number under the microscope before giving it away and when getting it back. they can not put the serial number on a different stone it is actually etched into the stone, at least with my Leo.
