How to tell if a diamond is real or fake? *update*

I had to send my ring back to Kay's because the diamond became loose when I knocked it on a counter and I got it back a week later (over the weekend). Well, when I got it back and ever since I got it back, I swear it's not the same diamond!!! The diamond I was proposed with was soooo clear! On the certificate of the diamond it's classified as colorless. And now, it just looks weird! It doesn't shine the way it used to in the light. I want to take it back to check the serial number and take it to a jewelers to check if it's real. I hated that Kay's had to send it out to get serviced and now I'm paranoid that it was switched. I swear it's not the same diamond!! To ease my mind til I can take it in, does anyone know how to tell if a diamond is real? Without the microscope.

ETA: just got out of a jeweler. He showed me my ring under the microscope and my serial numbers are the same!! Thanks God! He explained that the reason for the lighting difference is because they cleaned it to look brand new. He also explained the at home ways to check a diamond like the whole fog thing, the rainbow color stuff(he said not to trust those methods because they'll make you paranoid!!). Mine was picking up other colors that it didn't before (which was a reason I thought it was different) and he said that when it's cleaned like brand new it'll shine differently than when it has been handled. My band did come back with damage to it (which didn't help with me thinking it was different). He showed me how the damage was done. The pliers used to hold the ring to tighten the diamond damaged my band. So I do have to take it in to get that fixed, but I'll pass. I can live with that damage. He told me that it does happen, when rings will get switched, so he told me I can come anytime I need adjustments and he'll help me out for free. Everything they do is in store! Thanks everyone for the support, I was going crazy.

When I was looking at engagement rings at Kay's and similar places I saw a few reviews like this. Keeping my eye on this thread--this is horrible; wishing you the best!!!

So sorry to hear about that, Erika! Smiley sad

I totally understand how frustrated and angry you are and I can only agree with the ladies here - get your papers together and storm in to that place to unleash some wrath!

Regarding your "I knew right away it wasn't the same and FH told me I was crazy. " -- That's men for you. Smiley winking They always think we are paranoid if our sparkles don't sparkle too much anymore. Bring him with you when you have the thing tested and he'll see that you've been right. Smiley winking

@ Kellsey: Although they really should make it up to you, would you really want another piece of jewelry from the same place? Hell knows what's wrong with that stuff again...

@Bijoux: totally agree about men! But yes, I'd want *something*--I'd just never take it back to them for cleaning, sizing, anything. I'd heard of chain jewelers doing this before and they do have beautiful diamonds in stock, they just switch them out later on. I'd get a good diamond and run Smiley winking

If you can get hold of good quality diamonds, sure Smiley laugh Why not!

My fiancé is the same by teasing me that I think mine is not shiny anymore because it probably has soap and stuff on it by now (and I dare not to give it away for cleaning either)... Feeling with you!

Mine's antique so I have no guarantees on anything anyway haha. But I always think it's the prettiest right out of the shower (and I keep it on in the shower for that exact reason!). But if I had a "guaranteed/certified" ring and this happened you bet your butt I'd want to go home with some new shiny things!

This freaks me out since my ering center stone is an old world cut, high quality stone that his grand mother smuggled out in her skirts fleeing Nazi Germany. Every jeweler has commented on it when we were band shopping.

I know it needs too be sized just a bit but I'm terrified to turn it over to anyone for just this reason!

So hope this isn't what has happened here.

@Candy: OMG, I wouldn't leave that with anyone. Ever. You could get one of those ring sizer inserts to make it more snug, that's what I would do. But your diamond is truly priceless, no amount of insurance could replace it.

Oh man, I didn't even see this thread until now. What a horrible thing to have happen!

I worry that it's going to be bad news because I think she would have updated right away if it were good news... I'm practically biting my fingernails.
