How to store wedding dress

Amina, on October 15, 2019 at 9:28 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4
I have my dress at home now since the end of July. It’s currently in a white plastic garment bag inside of a white cloth garment bag hanging in my spare bedroom closet. Is this the best way to store my dress until the big day in January? Anyone have any suggestions on best practices?

I'm not sure why it's in both plastic and fabric bags, but I'd remove the plastic bag immediately (it can trap moisture from the air which can create problems). The white fabric bag should be plenty to keep the dress clean and protected. The only suggestions daughter's bridal salon gave us were to be sure to ALWAYS use the under arm ribbon dress hangers to help support the dress on the hanger (in addition to the dress's decorative straps) and to always use the ribbon loop underneath the train and hook that over the hanger as well. The goal was for most of the weight of the dress to be supported by the three ribbon loops over the hanger. Daughter's dress was a very full skirted a-line, and she ended up having it steamed the week before the wedding, after it had been pretty scrunched in the garment bag for nearly a year, but it looked gorgeous the day of despite having been stored all that time. If your dress is super delicate, I've read the suggestion to wrap in lightly with clean white cotton sheets and store it laying across an extra bed or other flat surface, but we didn't find that necessary. You don't have long now! Smiley winking

Yes, I read that storing it in plastic can cause it to hold moisture, which could cause mold. The plastic can also cause the dress to yellow over time. So, ditch the plastic bag and just use the fabric bag. I had to buy one for that purpose. But I found one for only $12 on Amazon!

Yeah for sure get it out of the plastic asap. I was told (when I made a similar post some months ago) that the acid in the plastic can stain your dress yellow s:

Just keep it in the cloth bag and if possible lay it flat (if it has straps) to relieve any tension off of them. Also keep it away from sunlight and moisture Smiley smile

    Hey Amina!

As the PPs mentioned, I would recommend you take the plastic bag out of the mix to avoid it retaining any moisture and damaging the dress.

Did you speak with the bridal store where you got the dress for tips on how best to store your specific dress? I would definitely advise doing so Smiley smile
