How to not cry

Jennifer, on February 1, 2017 at 1:44 PM

Any tips out there on how to not bawl your eyes out like a blubbery asshole while walking down the aisle? I'm hoping my anxiety and general social awkwardness will help fight back the tears.

Haha thank you @nonna. Show it, don't be embarrassed! This is my mom quietly saying "stop crying or everyone will think you're unhappy!" And then my even uglier laugh/crying face.

My vows are pretty light and I made sure to include some humor. That's just the kind of couple we are. We say meaningful things all the time to each other, just because we are getting married shouldn't be a reason to get all serious and emotional. Maybe just have a heart to heart before the wedding and just tell him everything you want to say and cry and away!! Just a suggestion, I know it's impossible to know how you will feel at that very moment in time.

I made my dad chat with me the whole way down the aisle! Seriously after taking a few steps I started getting choked up and whispered "dad say something funny NOW" Smiley smile

I have no advice. I just kept telling myself; don't mess up your makeup yet!

It was only bad for me when DH started crying. He kept insisting he was going to be stoic, and then first look came and he was red faced and teary eyed. Which of course made me cry. We had a few bouts during the ceremony where we got overwhelmed, but I only had maybe 4 or 5 tears actually fall. So I consider that a success.

We're doing a first look because I will completely lose it down the aisle if we don't. I think it will be immensely helpful in getting the build up of emotion out and give me some time to clean up before going down the aisle.

100% thought I was going to be a hot mess. Somehow I didn't shed any tears until my MOH's speech. I think staying together the night before helped calm nerves. Also the wedding day was so busy I didn't have time to get nervous!

I was too nervous to cry. We did do a first look and DH cried for that and for the ceremony, so I can't say that the first look definitely helped, but it might have made him cry less haha.

DH started to cry at the rehearsal...which then started to make me cry. We skipped the first look because he was afraid he would get too upset and have a red blotchy face for the ceremony haha. In the end, he held it in pretty well except for a cracking voice a few times, we kept it light and I even made a joke when saying "for richer.....very long pause..........for poorer" which lightened the mood and he laughed. I am not much of a crier but I insisted my Dad and I make jokes the whole way down the aisle, it helped take the pressure off of everyone staring at me and feeling uncomfortable

We did a first look. That included alcoholic courage. We mingled with our 12 guests for 20 mins before starting the ceremony. I'd practiced these vows, that included -multiple- jokes, for fucking months and had gotten it down to -only- crying at one certain part.

    When the moment came..

I got about 8 words into the first sentence, my eyes welled up and I turned away and muttered "fuck!". lol

I have zero advice to give. He cried, I cried, we made everyone but the dogs cry.

Like @FutureMrsNerd I have no advice but wanted to share my ugly crying photos if it makes anyone feel better.

In the second photo I look really happy but what is actually happening is I turned my head and did that thing where you suck in your breath really hard when you're crying and it looks like a smile lol.

I felt really embarrassed but was told by several people how sweet they thought it was, including my H.
