How to give my wedding dress more "poof"

Now a Mrs, on January 4, 2011 at 5:27 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

I purchased my wedding dress for our July 2011 wedding a few months ago. It came in recently and I tried it on, and to be honest, I no longer care for it much. I think I am going to stick with it, as it was quite costly, but does anyone have any ideas on how I can make it more poofy? It's very straight and I wish it had a little more volume.

Thanks!

Poof as in oomph? or making the skirt stick out more? it should be fairly easy to get a layered underskirt

I'd like the skirt to stick out a little more, it's a little too straight for me.

Just did a random google search and there's lots of different underskirts out there depending on what you want and how much extra length/material you have to cover it

these give a few ideas (not suggesting you buy from there, no idea what they are like, just for the pictures)

Thanks! I hadn't even though of an underskirt. Knowing that I have options and can add some volume to the skirt of the dress makes me feel so much better about it!

I actually just switched to a different computer and needed to log in. I must have made the other one a while back, about a year ago, when we first got engaged. I made this one, my current one, a couple of days ago because I liked the wedding websites you could make. I completely forgot that I had made the other one until I logged in and posted on this computer and realized my little avatar didn't look the same. Hah, I hope that makes sense. Basically, up until now, I completely forgot that I had made that other profile awhile back.

That's cool, just there have been a lot of trolls on the forum lately, wanted to make sure it wasn't someone pretending to be you!

that dress looks like it was made for an underskirt really - lots of extra folds of material - good luck!

I agree with others, look into different underskirts, and from your dress picture it does look like you can make it poof out.

I love it, it looks great. your seamstress can sew some crinoline into the underneath layers of the skirt pretty easily, or you can buy a whole petticoat to wear under the gown. the bridal shop should have a petticoat you can try on at your next fitting to see if you like it.

Margo...I have the same issue as you! Well...my dress already has light crinoline on the bottom but I was wondering what it would look like with a little more "poof". Im going to the bridal store to try on a petticoat underneath and see if it looks better or I should go with the original look of the dress. Good luck!

here is a pic of my lovely dress....

Yes a slip will make a BIG difference. My slip is similar to this.It has the polyester waist thingy, then the rest is netting (?).It poofs out just enough to give my dress a lift, without making it look like a Cinderella dress type.

I seriously love your ideas and am going to try them out! When I was dress shopping I was determined not to have the dress look like a huge ball down that I ended up going for super straight, I'm hoping to find a happy medium now.

Jennifer, you should take a picture when you try on a slip and let us see! I love your dress by the way!

z&k, where did you buy your slip? That level of "poofyness" is kind of what I am envisioning now.

The store that I bought my dress from still has it, they told me to come back in April for a fitting. Should I go back sooner to see if they have slips I can try on with it or just wait until April? I wanted to take the dress home with me, but they told me the dress usually stays at the store. Smiley smile

Hayley C, thanks! Those sand ceremony vases are so much nicer and cheaper than the ones I found! Hmm, don't know how you turn private on or off, sorry about that! Thanks so much!
