I asked this just the other week, and most of the answers were along the lines of "Have fun! Start looking now! But only commit and buy in enough time to have alterations and fittings (about 6-8 months prior)."

I don't think you can ever start looking too soon, because keep in mind you don't know how long it will take you to find THE ONE.

I am getting married three months before you, and started looking for my dress in April. Fortunately, I didn't have to look for too long before I found my dress. I ordered it in April and it is scheduled to arrive to the boutique mid-July.

I was told the dress could take anywhere from 3-6 months to arrive. Alterations then take anywhere from 6-12 weeks. I figured worst case scenario I was looking at a total of 9 months (6 months to come in and 3 months for alterations), which would put me into January (only 2 months before the wedding). 2 months isn't very much time, because you never know what else could happen (maybe the dress would take 8 months to get in).

You can order your dress later, but remember they can then charge extra fees for "rush shipping" and "rush alterations".

Hope this helps! Happy dress shopping.

I'm starting to look in Aug, but only waiting that long because that is the first time I'll be able to be where my family and friends are, and i wanted my first shopping trip to be with them.

I started right away. We got engaged in November, I found my dress and ordered it in January, it came in March....so I've had it for a few months now.

I agree with what everyone is saying...it is never too early to begin looking. I began looking 10 months before and purchased 8 months. Have fun looking!!!

I say start looking now -- as another bride said - you just dont know how long it may take to find the "one" -- after that, it will take about 6 months to have it made and then you will need a month+ for alterations.... i was very fortunate to find my dress the first day i went shopping, so i ended up with mine earlier than i anticipated -- but MAN did it feel good to get that out of the way!! also, the dress will inform a lot of decisions as to the style and decor of the event so there is no harm it getting it early.

    congratulations!!

I bought mine in January 2010 and received it in June. So I have had mine for over a year now. I the sooner you start looking, the better. If you find one that you absolutely LOVE then go ahead and buy it. But by starting now you will have time to search if you don't find something that tickles your fancy right away.

Ordering the dress about 8 or 9 months ahead is a good "safe" time period. But, you can look any time you want. I started looking on-line, then looked for shops in my area that carried dresses I liked. Finally, I decided to go to a salon. I called one salon to ask about a dress I really liked and before I could explain that I just wanted to see the dress in person, they asked when was my wedding, and when I told her said it was too far away and call back in a few months. Want to guess I never called back.

I suggest that you plan to go to the salon to try on a variety of styles to see what looks good on you. That can eliminate you continuing to look at styles that aren't suited to you. The dress that I originally had in mind wouldn't look good on my figure.

What if you find THE dress very early. Call on the phone (not while you're in the store, they may try to pressure you into making a sale) and ask if the dress is likely to be discontinued anytime soon. If they say yes, then you have a decision to make. If they say no, then keep looking in case you come across another dress you like even better.

I'd wait no longer than 6 months before. Some dresses can take a long time to come in.

I’m also new to this, getting married in June 2020 and I don’t know where to start and when should I start looking for a dress. I’ve received suggestions about going now to see what type of the dress looks good on me and instead of looking online for some dresses then become disappointed that it might not look good on my body shape. I don’t know where to start!!! Got engaged a week ago and my friends and sister are driving me crazy regarding wedding planning. 😰
