How much was your wedding cake?

SC_Bride, on November 20, 2013 at 2:12 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

I've been pricing standard 3 tier cakes to serve around 85-100 guests. Even publix wants around $330. I found a lady just starting up her cake making business and thought she'd give me a great deal but her quote was $356. Is this a good price? We're paying for the wedding ourselves and I'd rather not spend a lot on the cake but I don't want just a sheet cake. Am I being unreasonable in being disappointed by these prices?

Ummmm my wedding cake for 130 people (using the top tier as cake to serve and not to take home) was around $700. So I'm saying 356 is a pretty good deal! Especially if you like the cake.

Wedding cake is generally priced per slice.

    Type of filling

    Level of detail

Complications of set-up, plus there's the transportation element

I called a cupcake bakery to practically beg them to make my cake. They have awesome flavors, their cake isn't dry and their icing is fantastic. They told me as long as I was okay with separate cakes (see example) they would do it. They wouldn't do stacked cakes or fancy designs (they are doing a lace-y pattern). Including stand rental it's $125 and will serve 96 people. I sent them a check before they could realize how ridiculously under-priced they are.

Our flavors are hot chocolate, caramel apple, and white chocolate raspberry - all decorate on the outside the same so at least there's some continuity in the design.

I charge $2.75 a serving for a simple cake up to $4 for a more complicated one. So I would say its a good price. Which is why I'm doing mine myself lol

We had 85 cupcakes, a small circle 6-incher on top and a medium sized sheet cake (grooms cake) total was $350...got it from a local grocery store. No one knew the difference.

Thanks ladies! This site is sooo helpful.

The lady who quoted me $356 will do a filling for that price and deliver so I guess it isn't too bad. Just more than I was hoping for.

Cakes often about $3-4 per slice (closer to $4). Having multiple flavors, fillings, fondant, or anything else that's fancy will make it more expensive.

The quotes you're getting are normal.

    I'm buying Whole Foods Chantilly cakes for $26 a pop. 140 people. 15-20 servings per cake = 9 cakes = $234!

Lisa - that's a cool idea! Might have to look into that. Are you going to try to stack them or use a cake stand or anything?

SC_Bride, I am going to have different sized cake stands! I have 2 already! $5 at the thrift store! So I'll just have the cakes (minus weird grocery store decorating...just ivory) sitting at different heights with a bunch of tissue paper pompoms on the table Smiley smile

I had a cake tasting and for a 5 tier cake to feed between 150-200 people she charges $875--- it's a bit pricey and we have not given her a deposit yet but her work ROCKS! i dont think thats an unfair price!
