How much is too much for a photographer?

Valerie, on May 20, 2013 at 2:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

Hey guys!

Just to get an estimate....how much are you ladies spending on a photographer for your wedding? My soon to be sister in-law is a great photographer and offered to take the pictures for us at our wedding, but I'm worried she won't find time to enjoy the wedding while doing it (kind of stressful I've heard) not to mention I want her in the pictures! So I'm trying to budget for a professional photographer, but I'm not sure what a good estimate is.

I'm budgeting $1000, but I've seen people in my area to charge $1800 to $3000. Just look around in your area, and compare. Be sure to look at their work.

It really depends on where you live. I'm paying $1700 and that's on the cheaper side for where I am I think.

It really depends on your area and what's included in the package. We're paying $3700 which includes: engagement session, 10 hrs of coverage on wedding day, second shooter, all rights to the photos, and an open-air photbooth

Definitely depends where you live. Ours is $2200 for e-pics and 8 hours the wedding day.

I have seen photographers in my area range anywhere from around $700 - $7,000, it can vary A LOT. With that being said, we are paying $2800 (it was a $3500 package that we booked on a special deal he was having)

Depends on where you live. I'm in North Jersey and I'm on the lower median at $4000 for 8 hours, engagement shots and a photo album.

I agree with the other ladies...depending on where you live the price varies.

I'm in South Jersey and we're paying about $3000 which includes an engagement session, a 2nd shooter, all day coverage, rights to the photos etc..

It depends on the area & add-ons, but from what we saw the lowest packages around us were around 1.5k for one photographer for 6hrs, no albums or anything. We splurged on ours but we'll have 2 photographers and a videographer (HD) for ten hours, plus we get all the digital proofs (some places only give you a few hundred), a few printed albums, e-pics, and canvas wrap. My SIL & bro spent the same as us (5g) for two photogs for around 10 and 6hrs, no printed products or video, but they live in a city. So it really all depends on how much you want and where you're looking.

We are paying $1100 for ours. It is only 5 hours but it's a photography/videography package with engagement session as well. I'm in Los Angeles, so these things can easily cost well over $5,000 for photography alone. But, there is also a lot of variety. Have you considered looking on Craigslist? There's a lot of really good photographers who do it as a hobby only and have much better rates for that reason. You can ask to look at their work and many times, it is incredibly good.

My FH's cousin has her own photography business, and he had the same concern that she would not be able to enjoy the wedding. Once we discussed the details, she was more than happy to be our official photographer. During my search, I found a huge range of prices, so it depends on how long you want them to be there, what is all included, and what your budget is.

It's all based on your personal preference and location. Photography of the day and engagement was HUGE for us and we were willing to go a little over on it. We got a package for an engagement session, 5 hours of event day time, the main photog and an assistant and copies of everything plus a nice book of the wedding. Total came out to $4600. And we LOVE our engagement pictures so we're pretty confident the money was well spent and that our wedding day pictures will be stunning and really capture us.

For us, we won't remember the cake or the invites or what shoes I wore. We will, however, have our picture forever adorning our walls so we wanted really good quality pictures by someone creative and professional.

The more in demand a photographer is the more expensive. When I was looking for photographers I emailed several that had the style I loved. They were all around the same price range.

    Valerie-

It depends on where, how long you want photos taken (ceremony; ceremony and events; getting ready thru events; all day & night), how you want to receive the images (photos, book, CD, online) and the biggest factor- who the photog is. Typically if they are well-known & established, he/she will cost more than someone without the experience & talent.

I think respectable, professional photogs in my area start at about $1k-2k for basic services & go up from there. I know you can find CL photogs for $500 for all day but do you really want to trust those pix to someone who has to advertise on CL?

It is great if there is a 2nd-shooter as well. You'll get 2 perspectives.

Remember too, you are paying for the dozens of hours of editing.

Best advice? Find ones whose work you like (online, friends referrals), meet with several, & then worry about the money. He/she may have a deal or package that works perfectly for you. Congrats & good luck!

Photographers typically start in the $1800 range here, but I found one for $950. It's not her full-time job, and there aren't any albums or prints included.
