How much is the dinnerware on your registry?

AMBER, on May 30, 2012 at 9:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

How much is the dinnerware on your registry? We are registering for a casual set of dinnerware and no china. The set we are looking at is the Noritake Graphite Rim and it is about $40 a place setting. We are putting 12 place settings on the registry. Is this too pricey to put on a registry or is $40 a place setting alright? Opinions needed! Thanks!!!

    Totally fine IMO.

We looked at everyday vs. fine china and we decided to register for only one set of casual bone china from Crate & Barrel. I want to say it's $69.50/setting? We got all 12 settings plus most of the serveware. Forgot to say it's going to get used anytime we sit down at the table, which is pretty much every night.

Also that's a really easy price point for a gift, and people like giving place settings. It feels like a "complete" gift if that makes sense.

Just keep a range of price points and you'll be fine.

From what I've been told, nothing is really too pricey as long as you love it and it's something you really want. We had a friend put a 32" LCD TV on the registry and she got it! Just be prepared that you may not get all 12, you may only get 3 or 4. It also depends on your guest list.

I put 2 - 4 place settings priced at $70 each and got both at my bridal shower. Smiley smile But mine wasn't Noritake or anything, just Target.

Definitely not too much. I think it's the general thing for couples to need kitchen supplies. If you think about it, someone's cooking for 2, or there's twice the amount of dishes needed.... So dont worry about the price

    side note:

I may be crazy, but I'm not even putting china or general kitchen stuff on my registry. I'm a 2nd time bride, I've lived by myself for long time, now living w/ FH. So we have plenty of kitchenware. Also, I'm a clutz lol. I dont want someone buying me beautiful china only for me to break it when unpacking! Walmart is my cheap dish heaven lol

We only registered for a nicer set of correll plates that is like $40 for 6 settings. The reason we didn't register for more expensive ones was because we are afraid we would only get a few and we couldn't afford to buy the rest. Fancy settings have never been a part of our family, even at my grandparents. And we would rather get other things like a tent or a nice blender. But if you like it and you would be okay not getting all 6 then go for it.

We put the same place settings on our registry (8) and we got all of them.

Also, keep in mind that your idea of pricey might be different than someone elses. We registered for some stuff that we thought was expensive and we didn't think we'd actually get it - and we did. As long as you have a nice price range for people to chose from, your guests will buy what they can afford.

I have the same set, in green, on my registry. And I asked for 13 sets. That's my formal dinnerware....

We also asked for new plates, the everyday white from BBB for our everyday plates. A "set" costs $16.

I don't get the people who ask for $80 or $100 sets and don't cook. I don't understand how they'll ever have a dinner party.

The important thing if that YOU like it, AND, if you get cash, you finish your set. I don't imagine needing my set this year or next, but in 10 or so years I imagine I'll use it 3-4 times a year and I won't want to spend $2k then to buy it.

Thank you for all of the responses I feel better about it now! I know we probably won't get all of them, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't too pricey. Thank you so much I feel way more comfortable putting them on there now :+)

I agree Meghan! I do plan to use mine literally everyday and I cook almost every night. And if I have new china it's an excuse to make my family come to me for holidays instead of us travelling Smiley smile But yeah getting the formal china to sit in a china cabinet for years? Pointless!

I've registered for Kate Spade China at Macy's that's $119 per setting. I don't think it's to bad seeing how I just bought a similar setting for a friend a coup,e weeks ago!

Mine is Mikasa and it's $79.99. After the wedding Macy's gives you 10% off everything on your registry even if its on sale. So, what I don't get from my guests, I will just purchase myself at a discount.

FH and I decided to only register for a few items. Dinnerware is one of them. We love to entertain, so we are registering for 2.

Formal: Nortitake Platinum Wave 5 piece $129.00

Casual: Fiesta Cobalt Dinnerware 3 piece (square) $24.99 (FH's choice)

We registered at Home Outfitters (Canadian Version of BBB). Our place settings are less then $40/set.

Friends of ours who are getting married a month after us registered for dinnerware that is $45 just for the dinner plate, so would be over $150/set if you include everything. I think it's a bit ridiculous. But then I'm more practical.

We have a nice set of casual dinnerware so decided on just registering for China. We did a Nortake and registered for 12 place settings. Since my family lives in the Northeast and they don't have a store we registered in we have registered for our place settings at both stores we registered with. Our place settings are I believe $89.

We registered for a Lenox pattern that is made in the USA for $79/setting. FH and I are trying to have a made in USA home...and we like Corelle, but we wanted nicer stuff and there were very few options.

Mine was a Ralph Lauren set that cost $80/set. We registered for 10 sets, and received 9. We love to cook and to entertain, so our sets will be used on a regular basis.

We registered for Noritake Graphite 2 years ago. We only got a few of them, but we got a bunch of giftcards to Macys, so I went and bought the rest. It's a GREAT set. Good choice Smiley smile

FYI - I recently found these at Bed Bath and Beyond and I LOVE them. Just ordered yesterday - http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?sku=17493035& They only offer them at Bed Bath and Beyond though, so if you registered there, I'd definitely add them!

We registered for a Martha Stewart everyday set at Macy's for $50/setting. Macy's is forever having a sale and most of our guestlist are regulars there...

My cookware set was $550 at Macy's...this was a little hard for me to swallow, but my mom made a good point, people may go in together and they feel a wedding is a big event in someone's life and they want to make it special for the B&G

Edit: We opted out of fine china b/c I was having a hard time justifying over $1200 being spent on plates even though we entertain a lot. I would be a crazy person if something was to happen to it...

We only registered for everyday dinnerware. It was $50 for 4 place settings. We registered for 2 sets (so 8 place settings) and only ever got 1 because it was one of the most expensive things on our registry and outside the price range people in our circles usually spend on shower gifts ($20-$30).

We didn't register for "fine china" because we knew we would NEVER use it. No one that either of us knows has or uses anything but their everyday dinnerware, even when they entertain.
