So, your future in laws are good friends with this girls family. That makes your inaws obligated to attend but not you. Why would she even invite you? Because she wants your money, thats why. I would be sick or have to work that day or something, and hide out in your house during the event. I would send an empty card and say, Im sorry but I was ill the day of your shower. I sincerely hope you had fun, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Done. Geez, I can easily solve everyones problems but my own, for some reason...lol

So, what happens at this kind of a shower? Does she open each envelope and announce how much each person gave???

In your particular case I wouldn't go and wouldn't gift.

If I received an invitation like this, even if I was close with the person, I still wouldn't go and gift.

At a normal bridal shower, where you shower the bride with gifts like you're traditionally supposed to, I typically drop around $50-$75 on a gift.

This is the grossest thing I have ever heard. Completely unacceptable.
