I need to book a photographer asap, but in Seattle, WA they are charging like $3,000 or more. What is normal for 10 hours/all day?

@Evelyn, Sign that contract because you have a great Deal. I can see myself making absolutely no profit with your package, in fact I would probably be loosing funds. Great deal for you though!!

It's pretty common to allocate about 10% of your total wedding budget to photography...there's a give & take on that percentage depending what is most important to you. But I think it's easier to shop once you have an idea of what you want to spend & what you hope to get for that.

The things offered by each studio vary greatly. But as an example, we shoot on the west coast (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver BC), in Houston & do destination as well, in many cases with no travel fees. We start our packages at $1000 & go up from there & we always include ALL of the enhanced/retouched photos on disk for every booking- we never hold anything back. We have an array of albums & other keepsakes available through our studio at any time, or with a package. We try to be flexible because, though we obviously run a business, we simply just LOVE what we do & so our focus in more on the work, the creative process & making our clients very happy. We run like a boutique studio but an accessible price.

    Julie,

What I am about to say might make a few photographers on here a bit angry, so let's try to keep it on the DL. First off, I am a wedding photographer in the Seattle Area specializing in budget brides. After having shot many weddings, I realized that I would rather make brides absolutely thrilled with their photographs at an affordable rate than feel guilty for asking $3000+ for a single wedding. Many wedding vendors get into the business and lose their love of weddings after about the 30th wedding; for me, however, each wedding is a new adventure and I get to be apart of a new family for the day and capture memories that will make a couple happy for the rest of their lives. In addition, the actual cost of doing a wedding is fairly low, so I am able to charge much less than your average photographer and still make a solid income because I am able to be busier more often.

Here is the thing, price does not always equal professional. To Be Cont.

Price is the amount that some bride is willing to pay for services. There are plenty of photographers in this world just as there are hundreds of thousands of brides; however, finding the right match can be a bit tricker of an equation. It will depend on your budget and how much you can pay, but it will also depend on a myriad of other factors.

Here is my suggestion: find a photographer who is willing to be your best friend for the entire day - book someone who you don't mind just hanging out with while you get ready because, trust me, we are there for everything good and bad. Our sole job is to make you and the groom happy, so there is no limit to our services. That should be the goal of any wedding vendor; however, that is not always the case. So interview thoroughly. Smiley smile We are there to serve regardless of your budget.

    To Be Cont.

$3000 sounds about right for the average wedding cost. A lot of people think we photographers only work for that one day but it's more like a few weeks on just your wedding. My studio is located in Long Island NY and there are a lot of photographers who are just starting and willing to photography your wedding for $500 - $800. However, they don't know how to REALLY work with the postproduction process. Also they usually aren't experienced and miss photos of important moments during the wedding.

I suggest when choosing your photographer you get to know them by meeting with a couple of times, reading reviews and take the time to communicate what you want out of your photography.

Remember photography is more than documenting the day's events. A trained professional will capture the right moments and tell the story of your wedding. Twenty years from now all you will have are the photos and video of your wedding. You want to make sure the right professional is going to do the right job!

Price varies quite a bit depending on the professional you choose, and everyone knows the saying "you get what you pay for". That saying may not ALWAYS be true...but remember that everything about your wedding is a transient experience EXCEPT for the photo and video. We have seen people cringe over a $2,000 photography package but drop $20,000 on flowers that will die in a day. Everything about your wedding is important, but please consider the value of your investments in the LONG TERM when creating your budget list. It would be terrible to have your dream wedding, but the photography doesn't capture all of the beauty and hard work you put into it. Your wedding is worth great photography. Trust your instincts!

    Hey everyone,

its true prices to vary, but in all honesty "you get what you pay for"

The independent photographers will give you customer service beyond any company.( any one worth their salt anyways!)

As a photographer, I recommend not skimping on the photog. Those images will be how you look back at your wedding. There is only one shot to get it right...dont trust it to someone because you saved $4oo.

My clients are everything...its important you are on the same page and get along so you achieve the best & most creative photos.

One of the most important decisions of photography to keep in mind is are you shopping by price or by style? Hiring someone who you are comfortable with and confident in his/her ability to gently guide you through your wedding images throughout this extremely busy day is priceless. After everything has been said and done ... what is one of the few tangible reminders of your wedding day? Why not entrust that to someone whose sole livelyhood revolves around creating those reminders just for you?

The difficult truth about the cost and value of wedding photographers is that the title "Photographer" does not have any actual meaning. Some photographers are highly trained professionals with $10,000 to $20,000 worth of equipment, while others are just people who bought a $600 camera and are now calling themselves photographers. Both have the same title, but the quality of what you get should be very different. The other truth is that labor costs and incomes are tremendously different throughout the country. A person may need over $100,000 a year to live as comfortably in Manhattan as a person making $18,000 in a small town. Which means that $3,000 could be cheaper than $500.

In the end it is not the number of hours, the number of photographers, or even the albums that matters. It is the pictures, and the memories they bring back that matter. A good analogy is going to the doctor when you are sick. The goal is to get better, not to be seen by as many doctors as possible, or have the doctor spend as much time as possible. I have found that for me as a photojournalist working a lot of hours makes better pictures, but for some photographers the opposite is true. I have also found that with my style of photography working alone is often better than having a second photographer, because we don't keep getting in one anothers way. Some photographers will spend immense amounts of time in post-production, and others will just give you what they took.

You will not know the true value of your pictures until long after your wedding is over, and then you will hopefully be happy with the choice you made regardless of how much much or how little you paid.

We're spending around 2500 for 8 hours. We're going with Erica from www.ericalynphotography.com. Our friends used her and we LOVED their pictures.
