How much dancing will you have?

Summerbride77, on June 4, 2019 at 5:55 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16
We’re solidifying our reception schedule and I'm realizing we really only have an hour of dancing. I'm kinda bummed and wish I had negotiated an earlier start time (can't add time on due to sound ordinances).

How much dancing is everyone else having?

I am having 1-2 hours of dancing. Probably moreso in the middle of 1.5 hours. I think only having one hour is ok Smiley smile

Our ceremony is at 4pm, with cocktail hour starting at 4:30pm. The DJ will have the music up and running, and open the dance floor during cocktail hour if people want to dance. Then we'll do a brief break while we are introduced at the reception, then our first dance, then dinner. Once dinner is mostly done, the DJ will open up the dance floor again for the rest of the night. So, about 3 hours of dancing, maybe a bit more.

Maybe go back to your timeline and take a hard look at how much time your are giving everything.

Speeches take no more than 3 minutes each (otherwise it is too long, people will be bored)

Cake cutting - no more than 5 minutes, people also don't really need to be gathered, you can cut cake with just parents and the photographer.

Special dances - you can probably have your DJ cut down songs to maybe 1.5-2 minutes, 3+ minutes of slow dancing is a really long time.

Bouquet/Garter toss - maybe 3 minutes each (one song)

Hopefully that gives you some extra time!

An hour is fairly short. What is your current schedule that’s allowing you only one hour of dancing the whole night?

Thanks for the advice. We will earn some time back as our venue coordinate definitely has more time than need for speeches and such, and we’ve talked about that. But that earns us back maybe 20 minutes. We will be invite people to join the father/daughter, mother/son dances. So there's that.

There is no way your special dances should take 55 minutes. That should only be 3 songs. I would just do the 3 dances and open up the dance floor after those are done. That way there is more time for open dancing.

Omg! I just noticed a mistake in the schedule both on my copy and in the early email from the venue!! Dancing actually starts 8:50. So there is dancing from 8:50 to 10:50, 2 hours 😍😍😍

Good! Two hours is much better, just a single hour of dancing will end once it feels like the party is just getting started. Happy dancing 💃🏻 ❤️

Thanks everyone! I just emailed the venue to have them fix the schedule. I knew 1 hour felt super short, I can't believe I didn't notice the mistake on the schedule.

Yep! I just saw your timeline and was going to ask about that gap in time. Glad you were able to catch that and gain an hour of dancing.

We will have about 3 hours of dancing with a break in between for cake cutting/dessert. FH and my families are big dancers/ partiers so we knew we needed a good amount of dancing time.
