How much cake should I really get? Help please

I've been contacting vendors all day about our wedding cake. It's supposed to feed 100 guest..but then again not EVERYONE likes cake. We are really having 70 adults and 30 children. How much should my cake really feed? I don't want to have a lot of cake left over..especially if it's costing me...

I don't want to have a lot of cake left over..especially if it's costing me $300-$400.

The bakery you choose will help you decide how much cake to order. Make sure you tell them that you are having a dessert table. It makes a difference when cake is the only dessert served and when there are other options for guests.

As a side note, you are some what limited to picking a random number of servings you want. For example, a 10" round, 8" round 6" round will feed 75 people (same size cake is my profile pic). If someone has needs a cake to feed 68 people - they will get a cake to feed 75 people that is the closest a bakery can get to the needed servings. Once again, the bakery will explain all this to when picking out tier sizes and the number of tiers needed.

This was my daughters cake (the color was actually a bit more muted than the photo shows.) It was buttercream. Anyway, it's the one that served 85, with 134 guests, and we have cake leftover. All three tiers were cut, as the bakery gave the newlyweds a gift certificate for their anniversary.

My FH said he didn't want a groom's cake, but that might be the best option now that we have more people.

I think since you have extra sweets that a cake for 60-75 would suffice. I agree to let the baker help decide, but our baker seems concerned that the number increased...as she probably should be given our plans.

Our baker told us that each serving is only about an inch thick but still plan on a bit less. We plan on having about 88 servings for 100 people, and if need be, we can cut the top tier since we dont plan on saving it.

I haven't read all the post so I am sorry is someone wrote this already. I personaly would order a piece of cake for everyone, you would rather have extra then someone not get a piece. ALSO to save money you can order a smaller cake to show and then have a sheet cake in the back that also gets cut. After you do the traditional cake cutting if that is what you want to do. The venue takes the cake in the back and cuts it so no one will ever know you had a sheet cake.

As a pastry chef, I would recommend that if you are worried about how much cake because of price, a good idea may be to get your actual wedding cake (decorated, tiered cake) whatever size YOU would like. If you think you need more cake, you can get a sheet cake that your caterer can cut up for you and serve to guests, this will save you ALOT on price because most bakeries charge for labor/decorating costs. A sheet cake can just be the flavor cake and frosting, and no one will know the difference! Smiley smile

If you are not sure what size cake you will need for your wedding I would suggest using the "cake tier combinations" calculator on http://www.bakingit.com. You can play around with potion sizes, cake heights and come up with a basic cake shape that you like that will also feed enough guests. My only advice would be to make sure you get a guide for cutting your cake. If the person cutting the cake does not know how many it's suppose to feed you can end up with not enough. Personally I use the "cake slicer" app http://cakeslicer.baking.com and give my customers a copy of the slicing guide.

People have a misunderstanding of sheet cakes... Unless you're ordering the sheet cake from a grocery store bakery, most bakeries charge the same price per serving for sheet cakes as they do round cakes.
