If you are planning on doing speeches/toasts, how many people will give one? Who all is going to give a speech at your reception?

The idea of doing the speeches at the rehearsal dinner comes from my sister and BIL: they did this at their own RD, my FW and I loved it! (FYI i'm a groom)

We are doing this for the reasons you mentioned plus our parents,my step-parents and our siblings will want to give a speech/toast/roast but they fear public speaking , so giving them in front a smaller crowd is a good compromise.

About the thank you speech: my FW fears public speaking (I don't) but she still wants to say something, so we're planning to give a joint speech to accommodate her fear , I want her to "deliver" 3-4 lines and I'll take care of the rest. Since it's the only speech we're having at our reception, I would like it to last 3,5 - 4 minutes in lieu of the more traditional 2 min.

True but it worked out. This way I can ensure no embarrassment happens lol. I’m so glad I gave them time limits. Smiley winking

I love the idea of giving the speech together! Definitely helps with public speaking fears.

Oh my gosh, I could totally see people on their phones if they get bored, but getting up and walking outside the venue is crazy! Definitely a sign that the speeches ran on for too long lol. Time limits and limiting the number of speeches is a must.

You could always ask your DJ to make an announcement about it! You might also want to have a system determined so that ten people don't all jump up and try to speak at once, lol. Maybe a sign up list with the DJ so they know who to hand the microphone to next? Otherwise, this sounds super fun!

I'm similar to your FW! Public speaking and I don't get along, lol. I think it's great that she's planning to still say something! The joint speech will likely help ease her fear. I think the longer speech makes sense, since it's the only one you'll have at the reception. Sounds like you have a great plan in place!

No toasts for us. They always tend to be awkward and uncomfortable. Plus not everyone is comfortable with public speaking.

Nothing wrong with that! I agree that sometimes, the speeches can be a little awkward. Sometimes they can be fun though! I think it just depends on the person giving the speech and what they choose to say. Skipping the speeches also gives everyone more time to dance/eat/socialize at the reception - definitely not a bad thing!
